Summary
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Coordination and Administration
- Work alongside the Youth & Graduate Programs Directors to develop and coordinate all aspects of the graduate program.
- Facilitate graduate courses twice a week*, or as needed, including all course preparation, scheduling, and coordination. Courses may include K-12 Science Inquiry, Program Design & Planning in EE, and History & Theory of EE. (*some courses take place during evening hours, flexible work arrangements may apply)
- Work with the program directors to revise and update course syllabi and materials annually to coordinate with program schedules, accommodate past evaluations and recommendations, and continually develop and improve coursework within the guidelines and standards of graduate coursework as defined by the University of Northern Colorado (UNC).
- Support program directors with coordination with UNC including course registration, paperwork & action research project requirements.
- Grade student papers, provide feedback to deepen understanding of content and improve writing skills,and support students’ action research projects within provided deadlines.
- Revise coursework and assignments to maintain alignment with broader initiatives in science instruction and environmental education.
- Work with program directors to ensure that the graduate program supports WMSC Youth Programs’ educational philosophies and goals.
- Participate in regular Graduate Faculty Team meetings in order to maintain program consistency and provide support for students in their coursework and in their action research.
- Conduct regular evaluations to monitor outcomes and impacts of the Graduate Program and complete an annual program report with the support of the Youth & Graduate Programs Directors.
- Serve as faculty adviser on fellow action research projects.
- Facilitate one afterschool program throughout each school year.
- Co-Lead 2-3 weeks of Summer Science Camp through each summer season.
- Provide substitute staffing support for School, Summer & Sowing Seeds Programs, as needed.
Personnel Management
- Participate in and coordinate logistics for fellowship hiring process
- Provide support, mentorship, and guidance for fellows through regular check-ins throughout the program
- Coordinate trainings and course schedules to provide a holistic and organized experience for fellows
- Continue to develop and enhance the graduate fellowship program
Professional Development
- Conduct regular field observations of fellows and provide feedback according to established timeline
- Work collaboratively with Youth & Graduate Program Leadership to establish professional development goals and strategies for fellows
- Attend relevant conferences and represent Walking Mountains as both a participant and a presenter
- Communications/Marketing/Finance
- Work with Marketing to maintain and update graduate program website pages and application annually
- Promote and advertise fellowship program during application season
- Assist with annual budget planning process
Other Duties
- Contribute to Youth Programs Blog annually
- Serve on staff committees as needed
- Participate in organizational staff meetings (LTM, Staff), retreats, and cross departmental committees
- Adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures
- Assist with and participate in all special events
- All other duties as assigned
Work Environment
This position includes both office, classroom, and field (outdoor classroom) duties and includes occasional travel to schools and field sites beyond the Walking Mountains campus.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in related field plus minimum 3 years teaching, both in field and classroom contexts
- Working knowledge of Rocky Mountain ecology, science instruction, and environmental education principles
- Experience developing and evaluating educational curricula
- Completion and acceptance by UNC as adjunct faculty, including meeting their “tested experience” requirement
- Working knowledge of general ecology
- Experience in science instruction and environmental education
- (Preferred) Experience teaching undergraduate or graduate level students
- Maintain required medical certification (WFR, CPR) - can be obtained post hire
- Ability to effectively work on diverse teams or with a diverse range of people
