Summary
The Role
The GAP School Coordinator helps keep our days and schoolwide programs running smoothly while working directly with learners and educators. This is a collaborative, non-supervisory role. The Coordinator does not supervise educators or direct classroom programming; instead, they take ownership of specific schoolwide programs and logistics while providing flexible support across the school.
What You'll Do
- After-School Program: Take primary responsibility for GAP School's after-school program, including planning activities, supervising learners, managing daily routines, and creating a safe, engaging, fun end to the school day.
- Learner Support: Spend regular time working with our kindergarten and first-grade learners and helping children participate successfully in their days.
- Classroom Coverage: Provide substitute and classroom coverage when educators are absent or need additional support.
- Responsive Support: Respond to educator radio calls when an extra adult is needed, including helping learners with regulation, behavior, transitions, conflict, or other challenging moments.
- Exploration: Help plan and facilitate GAP School's Exploration program, including coordinating materials, schedules, and logistics and helping adults and learners bring ideas to life.
- Supplies & Organization: Manage school and program supplies, including inventory, purchasing requests, organization, and making sure materials end up where people can actually find them.
- Making Things Work: Notice when something isn't working well and help create simple systems that make life easier for learners and educators.
- Behind-the-Scenes Support: Help edit documents, prepare materials, organize information, and maintain school systems and documentation.
- Animal Care: Help care for GAP's reptiles and other classroom creatures.
- Whatever the Day Brings: Jump into the wonderfully random things that inevitably come up when you work at a small school.
Bonus, but absolutely not required: We'd love someone who enjoys music and would be excited to take over our ukulele program.
Who We're Looking For
Experience working with children is important. A degree in education is not. This could be a great fit for someone early in their career in education, outdoor education, camp, youth development, or a related field who is excited to learn and take on increasing responsibility.
- Patient, warm, playful, and genuinely enjoys kids.
- Comfortable working with children who think, learn, communicate, and regulate in different ways. Experience with neurodivergent learners is a plus.
- Calm when things get messy—literally or figuratively.
- A self-starter who can take direction and also recognize when something needs to happen without waiting to be asked.
- Organized enough to create systems, and flexible enough to change plans when the day requires it.
- Comfortable spending significant amounts of time outdoors in all kinds of weather.
- Willing to learn, ask questions, accept feedback, and try again.
- Able to contribute positively to a small, collaborative team and jump in wherever needed.
The Person Who Will Thrive Here
You don't need to arrive knowing how to do everything on this list. You do need to be someone who notices the bin of supplies that has become chaos and organizes it. Someone who sees an educator juggling six things and asks what they can take. Someone who can sit patiently beside a struggling child one minute and enthusiastically lead a group activity the next.
GAP is a small school. We work closely together, plans change, kids surprise us, and everyone's job occasionally includes something unexpected. If that sounds energizing rather than terrifying, we'd love to meet you.
