Summary
Girls on Outdoor Adventure for Leadership and Science (GALS) is seeking enthusiastic and committed Trip Leaders for a 14-day summer backpacking and science program for Michigan high school students. Trip Leaders support teens as they explore the outdoors, learn hands-on ecology and environmental science, and build confidence through leadership and backcountry skills. Leaders work closely with MSU scientists and staff to deliver a transformative, inclusive learning experience.
GALS is a free summer program designed to expand access to outdoor education and STEM for students who identify as female or gender-nonconforming, students of color, youth from low-income backgrounds, and others historically underrepresented in STEM. All are welcome to apply.
Position Highlights
- Lead a 14-day backpacking trip (July 25–August 8, 2026) with prep days July 22–24
- Facilitate field-based science lessons and outdoor activities
- Foster a safe, inclusive, supportive group environment
- Attend mandatory training May 9–10, 2026, plus additional prep sessions
- Maintain or obtain Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and CPR certifications (training provided)
