As the Food Service Manager, you will lead the planning and implementation of a rotating menu of hearty and seasonal kid- and adult-friendly buffet-style meals for Opal Creek’s Outdoor School, Research, Expeditions, and Volunteer Programs. Your backdrop will be the forests, creeks, and waterfalls of Silver Falls State Park and the Opal Creek Wilderness.

Over the course of the seasons, you’ll design menus, maintain relationships with vendors, arrange deliveries, cater meals to guests’ dietary restrictions and allergies, purchase food and manage a budget, oversee the health and safety of the kitchen, and lead the Opal Creek food service team. You’ll collaborate with and supervise a team of cooks that prepare meals for on average 120 people. You’ll play a key role in feeding and connecting students, volunteers, and staff through the heartfelt coordination and preparation of nourishing meals!

Summary

Position type: Full-time for 10 months, salaried, permanent/seasonal

Location: Silver Falls State Park and Salem: April-October, Opal Creek Wilderness: multiple weekends throughout employment term; remote in greater Portland/Salem areas in off-season 

Compensation: Salary is $4,200 - $4,500 per month, or $42,000 - $45,000 for a 10 month position

Benefits: 14 days paid vacation plus 5 holidays/80% health, dental, vision coverage during employment period/annual professional development stipend/business mileage

Perks: Basic housing on site during Outdoor School season/Staff housing in greater Salem area for subsidized rate (optional)

Programs: Opal Creek Outdoor School (spring/fall); Expeditions (summer); Research and Volunteer events (spring/summer/fall)

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

A successful candidate will possess these minimum qualifications. We are less interested in the titles you’ve held and more interested in what you’ve actually done and who you are.

●  2+ years food service coordination experience, including: menu-planning, ordering, and dietary accommodations

●  2+ years managing a high-volume, commercial, or camp-like kitchen

●  Experience with from-scratch cooking and baking

●  Experience leading adults and creating a positive work and team environment

●  Experience with health inspections and corrective actions required by HHS

●  Previous experience integrating equity, inclusion, and cultural relevance into food service and the workplace

●  Strong communication skills, written and verbal

●  Strong organizational skills & attention to detail

●  Servsafe certification required

●  Able to pass a criminal background check
