Work involves the long-range planning and maintenance of exhibits and display of appropriate habitats for live aquatic and terrestrial animals in captivity.

Summary

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
 
The Exhibits Coordinator performs difficult technical work designing, coordinating, fabricating, and maintaining all exhibits and signage at the Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex. Work involves the  long-range planning and maintenance of exhibits and display of appropriate habitats for live aquatic and terrestrial animals in captivity Work is performed under regular supervision of the Manager of Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex.
 
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
 

  • Produces exhibits, signage and print text and graphics using appropriate computer applications or outside source;
  • Designs, implements, updates, and maintains indoor and outdoor signage, displays, exhibits and audio visual presentations;
  • Works in cooperation with the Manager of Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex and other staff to develop written, and multi-media presentations for exhibits;
  • Works with the Aquarist to develop supplemental exhibits and signage for aquariums;
  • Assists other staff and Friends of Gumbo Limbo  with materials involving graphic display.
  • Chairs the Exhibits Committee

 
RELATED TASKS:
 

  • Supervises, coordinates, trains and schedules assigned volunteers
  • Participates in on- and off-site events and outreaches; fills in at volunteer stations onsite;
  • Assists Education Team in development of outreach booth designs.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • General knowledge of the local environment, ecosystems, plants and  animals both aquatic and terrestrial. Extensive knowledge of the requirements for professional design and maintenance of live animal collections, including various species' requirements for space, shelter, and lighting requirements, etc. related to its exhibit habitat. Ability to be creative and artistic in the design, implementation and maintenance of a broad scope of physical displays.  Proficiency with the use of computers, Microsoft Office Suite, and other design programs such as Adobe Illustrator, photographic equipment, research information, and other materials to prepare and present displays and exhibits to the public and students; Ability to work productively with environmental center staff and volunteers, and serve as host, leader, guide, or interpreter as needed. Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, reliability and the ability to think and act proactively are required. Effective time management, ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, and to meet deadlines.  Strong public speaking, organizational, and project management skills.  Capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, officials, subordinate employees, program participants, and the general public.  Must be able to work independently as well as with a team.  Knowledge and ability to use a variety of hand and power tools.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
 

  • Bachelors Degree or any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in exhibit design, computer science, biology/environmental science, graphic arts, or related fields.  Graduate degree or Master degree coursework in related field a plus. Minimum of three (3) years of hands on experience with graphic design and creating interpretive exhibits for museums, zoos, aquariums, or similar organizations.

CERTIFICATIONS / PROFESSIONAL LICENSES:

  • Must be CPR and First Aide Certified within first six (6) months of hiring

 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  •  Possession of a valid State of Florida Class "E" drivers' license with no more than six (6) points in the last three (3) years. 
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.  

 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
 

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.  Must be able to kneel, walk, and stand for long periods of time, including in sand and wading in water.  Must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme temperatures, heights up to 40 ft., noise, dust, pollen, animals, insects, poisonous plants, an dark or confined spaces.  May be required to wear other PPE such as a hard hat/helmet, safety glasses/goggles, safety shoes/boots, hearing protectors, face shield, safety harness, safety vest, and gloves.
