The Environmental Program Manager (EPM) will oversee the museum’s  EcoExplorers Internship program. This internship is a year-long program designed to inspire Broward County high school students to become Environmental Ambassadors that can have a positive impact on their community. The EPM will work in tandem with the Director of Sustainability and Workforce Development (DSWD), in serving to provide the Museum the expertise in topics related to sustainability, climate solution and environmental education. The EPM may also aid the DSWD in implementing and managing sustainability initiatives in museum operations. 

Summary

QUALIFICATIONS:   

Bachelor’s degree required in environmental science, biology or related field and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a museum or educational setting. Must have a strong understanding of the Everglades, South Florida ecosystems and Coastal Resilience issues. Management experience required in hiring, training, coaching, scheduling, and organizing staff and volunteers. Requires excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills, and must be self-motivated with innovative thinking skills. Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time and lift 50 lbs. Must be available to work weekends and holidays to successfully implement the EcoExplorer Internship. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Lead program development and implementation for the EcoExplorer Internship 

  • Manage a cohort of 80 Broward County High School students through the EcoExplorer Internship.
  • Train students to serve as environmental ambassadors in the museum and as stewards in their schools and broader community by working with them to build their environmental knowledge and workforce readiness skills.
  • Train and empower interns to deliver hands-on programming in the Museum’s physical space as well as through the MODS STEMobile.
  • Work with the EcoExplorer Interns on program days and after school to implement the internship’s programming. These days mostly consist of time EcoExplorers are not in school: weekends, holidays, breaks, teacher planning days, professional study days, etc.
  • Inspire youth to become stewards of the environment, with a focus on the ecosystems of South Florida, by assisting in project-based field excursions in the Everglades and other local environments.
  • Plan and host guest speaker panel discussions to highlight careers in sustainability, resilience, and environmental science/engineering.
  • Lead recruiting and training of a new group of interns annually.
  • Lead implementation of the EcoExplorer Internship’s participation in a National Science Foundation funded project called STEM Push.  The STEM Push program sets out to support underserved youth so they can persist and thrive in STEM related careers.
  • Assist with the planning of the Broward County Schools Youth Climate Summit and help to provide opportunities for EcoExplorer Interns to take a lead role during the summit.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of the MODS Youth Climate Action Forum.  The MODS Youth Climate Action Forum is an annual event that invites approximately 250 high school students to the museum for a day of climate solution discussions and action.
  1. Serve as a member of the Museum team that is implementing long-term strategic planning around environmental sustainability and, at times, assist the DSWD with carrying out the goals of the museum’s Hub for Resilience Education.
  2. Incorporate the EcoExplorer Interns in and assist with the development of new exhibits, lectures, outreaches, and programs that inspire dialogue and innovative thinking among museum guests and program participants that address the challenges of climate change.
  3. Always represent the Museum’s best interest both internally and externally.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned and qualified.  

Compensation Information

$60,000/yearly
