The Living Classrooms Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides hands-on education and job training with a special emphasis on groups from diverse backgrounds. Utilizing maritime and outdoor settings, the Foundation provides experience-based education programs emphasizing the applied learning of math, science, language arts, history, economics, and ecology. The Foundation’s history and future focuses on hands-on education programs that motivate students through “learning by doing”.

Summary

As a Masonville Cove Environmental Educator you will be a valued, intergral part of the campus staff as you assist with education and community programs both on campus and at local schools.  The environmental educator implements the Living Classrooms Foundation’s Masonville Cove education programs including field trips on campus, outreaches in schools, virtual lessons, and community programs.  These programs center around Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Wetland Ecology, and Stormwater Runoff Pollution, however, many other environmental and natural topics are also addressed.  High energy, dedication, enthusiasm, flexibility, organization, professionalism, and strong work ethic are required to be successful in this position.  This position requires the ability to follow detailed instructions, and personal initiative to complete tasks in a timely manner. This is a full time, 40 hour position with typical work hours Tuesday-Saturday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Salary is $31,200 annually with great benefits.

Essential Functions: Responsibilities of the Educator will include, but are not limited to:

  • Help plan, equip, and run the educational programs at the MCEEC and at the participating schools.  Must have reliable transportation and be willing to use personal vehicle to drive to local school outreach programs.
  • Assist in the development and successful implementation of new educational programs at the MCEEC.  Create materials (documents, videos, displays, etc.) to be used by program participants and site visitors as needed, acknowledging that all intellectual property rights to materials created during employment belong to Living Classrooms Foundation.
  • Adjust and implement existing lesson plans, as provided by Living Classrooms Foundation.
  • Maintain, calibrate, monitor and care for laboratory equipment to keep in good condition and in good supply.   This includes monitoring of lab aquaria and live animals.
  • Research and gain information and knowledge to prepare for leading programs.
  • Understand and assist coordination of MCEEC programs with local, state, and national education standards.
  • Become familiar with instructing special groups ( i.e. teachers, adults, at risk, gifted, learning disabled, etc.)
  • Welcome, communicate with, and encourage participation of teachers, chaperones, and volunteers that take part in MCEEC programs.   
  • Provide good behavior management by holding students accountable for actions as well as demonstrating consistent and creative use of positive reinforcement techniques. Encourage teachers to assist with group management and reinforce MCEEC safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Occasionally lead more than one program a day, after-school programs, or weekend events.
  • Collaborate with MCEEC Director, Education Supervisor, other Educators and site staff in a professional and cohesive manner.
  • Assist with training interns, volunteers, or other staff in MCEEC procedures and education curricula.
  • Assist with leading 6 week summer fellowship program.
  • Assist with daily building opening and closing procedures.
  • Assist with visitor services, which includes orienting and providing site information for visitors, answering phone calls, and responding to general inquiry requests via the Masonville Cove website and social media platforms. 
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of the education building and materials, including: Great Room, kitchen, bathrooms, and lab spaces.
  • Maintain professionalism at all times as an important representative of the Living Classrooms Foundation and Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center.
  • Such other duties as are necessary for the operation of the programs or the Foundation or as assigned by the Director of MCEEC or the Education Supervisor.

Minimum Requirements/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as Biology, Environmental Science, or Education
  • At least 1 year experience as an Educator (formal or informal)
  • A passion for nature and working with children in an outdoor environment
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects, work outside in a variety of weather conditions, including rain, cold, and hot weather, and walk/stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered.  Proof of vaccination will be required.
  • Must be willing to submit to pre-employment drug testing and background check, with negative results. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with youth and implementing group management techniques in an outdoor setting
  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Spanish Language skills
