Environmental Educator

The Environmental Educator is a dynamic and energetic individual who inspires visitors of all ages to care for the Lowcountry.  The educator works independently and can quickly adapt to a fast-paced work environment. The educator cares for the Coastal Discovery Museum’s living collections and is an engaging presenter about local natural history. The educator works with staff and museum volunteers to present engaging, and age-appropriate activities, presentations, and classes. 

This position requires a bachelor’s degree, along with at least two years of experience working with children in a similar context (museum/zoo/nature center education, outdoor recreation, school, summer camp, etc). The educator must have content knowledge in biology or natural history, and be comfortable handling and caring for animals, including reptiles and amphibians.  In addition, excellent written and oral communication skills; and strong organizational skills are necessary. The Environmental Educator must also be able to work as part of a team and to engage with visitors and volunteers of all ages.  The educator is expected to strongly motivated, quick to adapt, and able to evenly manage students and adults in a variety of situations.

The educator will lead school programs (in person and virtually), present public programs (families, individuals, adults, clubs, etc.) and be responsible for maintaining supplies, coordinating with volunteers, setup, teaching, and cleanup related to these programs and others. The vast majority of this programming is in natural history subjects, but other cultural, historical, or mission-based programming may be required as needed (training and content will be provided for all subject matter).

The educator will manage habitat maintenance for all the animals used in educational programming and have the responsibility of cleaning the museum’s tanks to a high quality, feeding animals, and ensuring the lab and kid’s zones of the museum are clean and organized.

The educator will assist in maintaining outdoor interpretive areas including gardens, ponds, and conduct setup for outdoor docent-run programs such as Blue Crab Discovery as needed.

The starting salary for this position is in the $35,000-$39,500 range.  The employee will be eligible to enroll in the museums HDHP after 90 days, with the premium for the employee fully paid by the museum.  Dependents may be added at the employee’s expense. After 1-year of continuous employment the museum will match up to 4% of the employee’s salary in a fully vested 401k plan.
