Christodora, a 126-year-old nonprofit, nonsectarian organization, seeks Environmental Educators (EEs) for our Winter Ecology Program (WEP). WEP is an in-school program that provides an on-ramp for many students to attend our camp and weekend programs for many years to come. Strong preference will be given to applicants who choose to stay on with Christodora at our Manice Education Center located in Western Massachusetts for the spring/summer season as an Outdoor Educator. This is a great opportunity to share your passion for environmental science and nature with NYC youth.

Summary

Environmental Educators in New York City co-teach two semesters (Nov-Jan & Feb-April) providing a 7-week curriculum that brings hands on, experiential lessons in ecology, including owl pellet dissection, animal adaptations with animal furs and skulls, flower dissections, and more. For seven weeks you will travel to co-teach 4-6 classes in a partner school with another Christodora environmental educator, with different partner schools being served on each day of the week.

Responsibilities 

  • Develop/present ecology based environmental lessons with experiential and inquiry based approaches to classrooms in our partner NYC public schools.
  • Participate in goal-setting and lesson prep ahead of lessons with co-educators and management as well as ongoing debriefs and evaluation sessions.
  • Facilitate outdoor programming with key partner organizations and schools, including day trips to environmental/cultural institutions and natural areas in NYC.
  • Maintain a good standard and quality of educational materials and create new materials as needed.
  • Assist in outreach and coordination with partner schools as directed by City Programs Manager
  • Implementation of program surveys to classes for program evaluation.
  • Assist in active recruitment of students to other Christodora programs while in program.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Passion for nature and science , and enjoys connecting with urban youth.
  • Ability to be flexible across many different classroom settings and school cultures, and provide sensitive caring approaches to the diverse needs of students.
  • Team-oriented and adventurous spirit, willingness to learn.
  • BA/BS in related discipline preferred. Significant professional experience considered.
  • At least 4 weeks experience in a role responsible for children.
  • Background clearances and medical physical required.

Preferred:

  • Experience in outdoor / environmental education
  • Experience working with urban school groups
  • Spanish/English Bilingual a plus.

Compensation Information

  • $600 per week, paid in biweekly installments
  • Spacious staff apartment on the Grand Concourse with internet and utilities included. Arrangements can be made for non-residential staff.
