Some activities include:

• Baseline data collection
• Traditional foods gathering and processing
• Invasive species management
• And much more!

Summary

The Hoonah Indian Association is seeking a qualified individual to co-lead our summer youth crew for the 2023 summer season! Provide experiential education and training to help Hoonah’s youth get on the path to higher education or employment in natural resource management.

Essential functions: 

Coordinate and implement identified youth education and engagement initiatives relevant to fisheries, climate, and marine sciences, and co-lead HIA’s summer youth work crew. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Co-lead the summer Alaska Youth Stewards (AYS) work crew for youth ages 15 to 25. 
  • Chaperone overnight travel opportunities for high school students and/or youth crew. 
  • Communicate with community about ongoing projects virtually and in person.  
  • Assist with the development of sustainable, long-term youth environmental education and workforce development opportunities.   
  • Successful candidate may have the opportunity to help deliver college level dual-enrollment coursework (Oceanography 101, Fisheries Technology) through the University of Alaska Southeast Fisheries Technology Department in Hoonah City High School during Fall and Spring semesters.  

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree and experience in outdoor education, classroom teaching, or combination of training and experience.  
  • Experience in trauma-informed, culturally relevant, and culturally responsive teaching. 
  • Experience creating and maintaining educational resources, supports hands-on learning. 
  • Possess excellent social and interpersonal communication skills.  
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License 

 

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:  

  • Work is primarily outdoors during the summer. If extended into the fall, the position will be based in the office and classroom during the school year, with occasional trips for outdoor education.

Compensation Information

$20-$22 Hourly, depending on experience
