Share your passion for nature and education while teaching at Neighborhood House of Milwaukee’s (NHMKE) primary site in Milwaukee, partner schools, and our Nature Center in the Oconomowoc Area. This position works with diverse people, ages 6 weeks to adults.             

The Environmental Education Coordinator’s (EEC) reports to the Associate Program Director. The EEC’s primary responsibilities include promoting awareness of and appreciation for nature and sciences (STEAM) through hands-on experiential education. The EEC employs interpretive, outreach and administrative skills to: (1) design and implement and manage NHMKE’s environmental education and interpretive programs, highlighting the natural world as well as science theory and techniques for our participants; (2) train and supervisor summer interns and volunteers; (3) strengthen efforts to reach and provide nature and  science-based programming and educational opportunities to diverse, under resourced and underserved communities including our rural/suburban area; (4) assist with the daily operations and coordination of educational animals and gardens at all NHMKE sites. (5) provide program-based assistance to NHMKE Families, Volunteers, and departments; and, (6) perform a variety of administrative and technical duties in support of the organization; (7) Other duties as assigned

75% Education and Interpretation and 25% Community Outreach.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies/Science, Education, Integrated Studies, or related fields.
  • Must have at least 1-year experience coordinating with an additional 2 years minimum of teaching (formal or informal)
  • Ability to work and direct groups of all ages and sizes
  • Able to adapt
  • Excited about learning
  • First Aid/CPR (preferred, not required)
  • Strong organizational, problem solving, teaching, and computer skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently, in a group or individually.
  • Comfortable working with live animals
  • Comfortable working with people of all ages including  elders or people with special needs
  • Comfortable speaking in front of a crowd
  • Comfortable assisting the administration in regards to events, programming, and day to day tasks
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced, creative environment
  • Cheerful and outgoing demeanor

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Leads staff and volunteers

QUALIFICATION and EXPERIENCE: One year or more of successful experience planning and coordinating programs with ages 6weeks to 18 years old. At least 2 years of experience teaching in urban and rural settings. Applicants must enjoy working in a fast-paced and creative environment as well as outdoors in natural settings.
