Come be an Environmental Education Apprentice at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (LBL)!

LBL consists of over 170,000 acres located on a peninsula in Western Kentucky and Tennessee.  Within that peninsula there are a variety of different things to do!  You can camp, hike, ride a bike, ride an OHV in our designated OHV area, horseback ride, visit any of our educational facilities, and more.

Summary

We are currently looking to fill positions at one of the educational facilities within LBL called Brandon Spring Group Center.  There are 2 types of positions we are trying to fill at the same time:

  1. A single-role position where you will complete the entire apprenticeship here at Brandon Spring Group Center.  Common responsibilities will include:
    1. Completing check-in and check-out procedures for groups visiting the facility.
    2. Lead environmental education programs, assist on the serving line and in dish return, and help with basic facility maintenance projects.
    3. Caring for residential animals.
    4. Assisting at other facilities (campgrounds, trails/OHV, nature station, homeplace) as needed.
  2. A split-role position where you will complete part of your apprenticeship here at Brandon Spring Group Center and the other part at the Woodlands Nature Station.  Responsibilities at Brandon Spring Group Center are listed above, and responsibilities at the Nature Station will include:
    1. Providing educational programs and daily care of native rescued wildlife, with possibility of visiting schools and other off-site facilities for outreach programs.
    2. Lead or co-lead special programs like sunset kayak trips, hummingbird dinners, and other special event days hosted by the Nature Station.
    3. Opportunity for falconry glove training, program animal handling, and interpretive guide training.

Both positions involve working full-time hours for 9-11 months (typically starting sometime in February and ending in November possibly into December).  Both also have opportunity to attain special trainings and certifications.

As part of the apprentice program, you will receive $300/week (paid biweekly via direct deposit) and housing is provided.  Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you may qualify for the Public Land Corps (PLC) Program which would qualify you for 2 years of non-competitive hiring status for permanent positions within the Forest Service and other land management agencies.

If interested in applying, or have any questions, please e-mail your resume/questions to Aly Collins-Fantauzzo at alyssa.fantauzzo@usda.gov or call (931)232-7405.
