Rockland Farm Alliance seeks an experienced educator to design and lead our education programs, including our popular Junior Farmers’ Summer Camp program, to further the agricultural education mission of Rockland Farm Alliance. The person in this role will coordinate and manage year round educational programs and workshops, and oversee a summer day camp and summer after care program.

Summary

Rockland Farm Alliance seeks an experienced educator to design and lead our education programs, including our popular Junior Farmers’ Summer Camp program, to further the agricultural education mission of Rockland Farm Alliance.  The person in this role will coordinate and manage year round educational programs and workshops, and oversee a summer day camp and summer after care program. The Education Director will work with the Afterschool Program Manager and Volunteer Manager and will report to the Executive Director.   

The Summer Junior Farmer Camp educates school age children about the wonders of nature, food and farming through hands-on learning on the farm; animal care, gardening, soil health, seasonal crop and cultural traditions are taught in weekly camp sessions. Children will learn how to care for goats and chickens and carry out daily farm chores, and enjoy gardening, foraging, outdoor games, cooking and crafting.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Oversee the daily operations of the summer camp, including staff supervision and daily maintenance.

  • Coordinate program delivery with the Executive Director.
  • Ensure appropriate Covid-safe camp guidelines are met; implement general health protocols. 
  • Coordinate weekly schedules and tasks with Volunteer Coordinator, ensuring  consistent procedures.
  • Oversee hiring and scheduling of  Summer Camp Counselors.
  • Maintain financial record keeping and program database management in coordination with Administrative staff

2. Build a farm-based curriculum for the summer camp. Work with the Executive Director and Afterschool Program leader to create a curriculum focused on agricultural and environmental farm-based learning

  • Communicate curriculum requirements to appropriate persons involved in the running of camp.
  • Oversee the implementation of the curriculum. 

3. Oversee the financial management of the camp program budget to ensure adequate funding; 

  • Develop and monitor the budget alongside the Executive Director for summer camp operations. Submit Expenditures to the Executive Director for processing. 
  • Maintain inventory control and place orders for program supplies.

4. Recruit, hire, and train seasonal Camp Counselor staff.

  • Recruit leaders and staff based on camper enrollment and program requirements.
  • May make staff hiring recommendations to the hiring committee.
  • Schedule weekly/daily meetings with counselor staff as appropriate.
  • Coordinate and lead pre-camp Counselor training.

5. Manage communications with parents, campers, leaders, staff and volunteers.

  • Maintain communications with parents, alumni, and leaders.
  • Coordinate and distribute program staff manuals.
  • Maintain website and social media pages for camp.
  • Communicate with parents regarding camper or leader situations. 
  • Facilitate evaluations of camp program, staff, leaders, and directors.
  • Ensure that all records, materials, and equipment are accounted for and securely stored at the end of the season delivery.

Other Job Duties:

  • Oversee check-in/check-out procedures (Morning and Afternoon)
  • Attend training sessions as needed.
  • Any tasks that may arise related to the success of the summer camp program.

 

Relationships:

The Summer Camp Director will work collaboratively with internal and external individuals and groups to ensure the enhancement of the camp operation. These individuals and groups include but are not limited to: Executive Director, Event Coordinator, Website Designer, Farm Manager and Volunteer Coordinator.

Many of the people who make Camp run are volunteers, so the Camp Director must be able to lead, inspire, and manage them effectively.

Equipment Used:

Summer Camp Director will use the computer to access the internet for a variety of purposes including but not limited to: our database, camper photo sharing and email delivery system, Camp website and email, online ordering, and slide show creation. Director must also be able to use a digital camera, video camera, and projector.

Qualifications:

This position requires a college degree and 2-3 years experience as an educator and/or manager with a camp. Computer skills are required. Training experience in working with children, teens, and young adults preferred.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires the ability to present yourself in a professional manner, communicate, listen to others, observe others’ actions, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals, plan and organize, and physically move about the camp property in various environmental conditions.

Tenure:

The duration of this position includes the summer camp season and the time needed for pre-camp staff training, preparations for camp opening and post-camp closure. There is potential for a longer-term role in all of our educational programs.

Salary is commensurate with experience.
