The right candidate will have the opportunity to engage with K-12 students and the public delivering hands-on marine science education, attend outreach events, and develop marine science curriculum.  This position would work closely with the Education Department Chair and volunteers to deliver high-quality, marine science-based education to people of all ages and backgrounds at school programs, camps, and community events. Help us cultivate the passion of today’s youth as they transition into the decision makers of their generation; creating a healthy future for whales, dolphins and our entire planet. 

Summary

Whale & Dolphin Conservation's education mission is to inspire youth environmental advocates. We believe youth, and people of all ages, have a natural affinity for whales, dolphins and the ocean. Our goal is to foster ocean literacy through inclusive and robust educational programming in the classroom and community. Our educational programs encourage participants to explore and cultivate their sense of wonder in a fun and mindful learning environment. Through inquiry-based lessons and activities, we strive to increase students’ science literacy, and inspire youth to be environmental advocates. 

Role responsibilities:

  • Support the creative & strategic development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of WDC education programs.     
  • Help with the recruitment, management, and training of interns and volunteers. 
  • Provide content for and support the creation of print and digital communications including newsletters as well as supporter and program materials. 
  • Represent WDC professionally and personably as you engage with students, supporters, and members of the general public.  
  • Use data to evaluate and improve strategies. 
  • Stay informed of applicable emerging science and conservation issues.   
  • Work with fundraising team to support the work of WDC including supporting grant applications and reporting, corporate partnerships, and campaigns. 
  • Work to improve Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the marine conservation and science field. 

 

What we need you to bring to the table: 

  • Undergraduate degree in education or marine science/conservation or equivalent experience  
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and working with children  
  • Able to quickly adapt and embrace change   
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team 
  • Must be able to work under challenging environmental conditions 
  • Have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license or the ability to obtain one 
  • Must be able to walk on rough terrain during inclement weatherand lift 50 pounds 
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills 
  • High level of self-motivation with excellent organizational and creative skills including the ability to reprioritize and pivot as needed. 
  • Enjoyment of working in a fast-paced, evolving and growing environment as part of a small but powerful team 
  • The ability to execute tasks, with accuracy, on tight or unexpected deadlines 
  • Willingness to work some nights, weekends, and holidays 
  • A passion for positively representing WDC and our mission to a diverse audience  
  • A desire to make diversity, equity and inclusion a priority in their work and be welcoming of people from diverse background  
  • Must be able to legally work in the United States 
  • Must be able to pass a background check (CORI/SORI)  

What we’d love you to bring in addition:

  • 1-2 years’ experience in education or marine science/conservation.    
  • Experience in public speaking and written content creation.   
  • Creativity  
  • Familiarity with Next Generation Science Standards  
  • Experience working with Microsoft 365  
  • Experience with evaluations and statistics  
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish a plus

Compensation Information

Salary 

Salary is based on metrics set forward by the Massachusetts Equal Pay Act, so the range for this position is broad depending on the candidate’s level of education, experience, ability to travel, and management responsibilities. As a result, the salary for the position is set at $45,500 annually.
