Summary
This position will deliver high-quality programs that convey the Zoo’s mission. The ideal candidate will be self-motived, demonstrate a positive attitude and work well in team environments. The Secondary Programs Coordinator will create and build programs to engage over 700 local youth, ages 10-17, and their families in health promoting outdoor adventure activities during the next three years. The coordinator will serve as a front-line instructor position for these programs. The outdoor activities will help individuals build skills and include hiking, biking, orienteering, kayaking, fishing, birdwatching and wildlife tracking. This is a grant-funded position, and the coordinator will be accountable for reporting data. The coordinator will work with, create and build upon relationships with existing and new partners within the community to bring access to all. This position will work on creating and teaching secondary school programming and will support other educational programs as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Provide support for all education areas of operation in the Zoo.
- Work with Curators to develop and coordinate curriculum for new secondary programs.
- Assist in the design, development and implementation of curriculum/educational program(s) that are age-appropriate, educational, fun, and in direct support of the Zoo's mission.
- Work with Curators on the development, planning, scheduling, training, organization, execution and evaluation of assigned education programs.
- Work with a variety of groups, organizations and stakeholders.
- Work not only with kids, but incorporate their families too.
- Conduct offsite and on-site education programs.
- Prepare program areas, classrooms, materials and supplies before and after programs. Keep program areas, classrooms, supplies and storage areas neat and organized.
- Interact with general public by answering questions and making public appearances on
behalf of the Zoo. - Demonstrate superior customer service with customers, both internal (i.e. co-workers) and external (vendors, visitors, students, parents, etc).
- Maintain positive working relationships with volunteers, co-workers and program participants.
- Train and supervise volunteers, interns, part time or seasonal staff.
- Plan and organize daily work routine. Establish priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology. Attend meetings.
- Establish goals, objectives and marketing plans for programs under position.
- Contribute to maintaining high morale among all Brevard Zoo employees.
- Develop and maintain cooperative and courteous relationships with department employees, staffers and managers in other departments, representatives from organizations, customers, and the general public so as to maintain good will toward Brevard Zoo’s good image.
- Tactfully and effectively handle requests, suggestions and complaints from other departments and persons to maintain good will within Brevard Zoo.
- Must be willing to work with a wide variety of animals.
- Maintain animal handling requirements, work to ensure health and safety of animal ambassadors and maintain best practices for those animals.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Science or related field
- Minimum of 3 years of informal or formal teaching experience, with emphasis on middle/high school students
- Certified in CPR and First Aid preferred, and additional training may be required.
- Experience in curriculum development and/or program development in an informal learning setting.
- Experience teaching in an outdoor setting and enthusiasm for the outdoors and natural world; able to work in physically demanding conditions
- Experience in a variety of outdoor skills (hiking, fishing, etc..)
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills; able to speak to small and large groups
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Computer competency required
- Enjoy working with children
- Enthusiastic team attitude and a strong work ethic
- Versatility and initiative
- Ability to work flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings and holidays as required

Compensation Information
This is an hourly position with a range of $15.00 to $17.50 per hour.
