About This Position
Mass Audubon South East encompasses 22 wildlife sanctuaries including two nature centers in Attleboro and Marshfield. We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic educator to join our year-round staff and offer programs to diverse audiences throughout the year. This Educator Coordinator position will work closely with members of the camp and school programs team to provide youth programing across the South East Region. Oak Knoll Wildlife Sanctuary in Attleboro will be the primary location for this position.
During the summer months, the Education Coordinator will serve as the Assistant Camp Director responsible for overseeing Oak Knoll Nature Camp. From September to May these responsibilities shift to teaching and coordinating preK-12 school programming and vacation camps primarily based out of Oak Knoll. There will also be opportunities to assist additional school and public programs for sanctuaries in Mass Audubon’s South East Region including Allens Pond in Westport, Tidmarsh in Plymouth, and North River in Marshfield.
The ideal candidate will have will have experience in the oversight of registration, camper and staff management, program design and delivery, risk management, and health care supervision. They will have strong experience working in collaboration with a diverse population of people, preschool and elementary classroom teachers, and youth. They will have an interest in making environmental education and conservation work more accessible to learners of varying abilities and have comfort with, and interest in, special education, accessibility, inclusivity best practices. They will bring skills in program and curriculum development, live animal programming, professional development for teachers, and evaluation of science, environmental, and STEAM programs. They will also have experience in designing marketing plans for programming, managing summer camp programming, developing and managing budgets, and recruiting, hiring, and supervision of other educators. Strong written and verbal communication skills are a high priority.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as Assistant Camp Director for the Oak Knoll Nature Camp in Attleboro, MA assisting the Regional Camp Director with administrative tasks throughout the year such as; helping to process camper registrations and documentation, answering general communication and inquiries about camp, providing marketing support, hiring of day camp staff.
- Assist with the planning and delivery of summer camp staff training, fill in to teach camp groups as needed, and oversees day-to-day camp operations. Mentors and supervises counselors as they develop and deliver nature related programs.
- Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures during camp programs, assist in the implementation of staff training on safety and nature activities, provide guidelines for programs utilizing camp equipment, ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures in all program areas, and assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in all group program areas.
- Teach vacation camps, group programs and assist with other educational program and audiences as needed.
- Develop and teach environmental education programming that are age-appropriate and culturally responsive, focusing on engagement and outreach with early education centers, preschools, K-12 schools and community partners, developing on and off-site, virtual, and after-school programs.
- Collaborate with other Mass Audubon educators to deliver quality programming and actively participate in statewide education meetings, work groups and professional development trainings.
- Attend and actively participate in regional, departmental and statewide staff meetings, and both PreK-12 and camp professional development.
- Maintain educational supplies, curricula, instructional materials, and resources.
- Maintain accurate records of programs and program participant.

Must Have’s:
- Experience teaching and working with children in outdoor, school or camp settings.
- Experience working in a regulated childcare or summer camp environment where there were opportunities for managing health care, program development, youth/staff supervision, and youth behavior management.
- BA or BS in environmental education, environmental studies, biology or earth science with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in environmental education.
- Requires First Aid and CPR certification upon hire.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and proficiency in office software applications.
- Outstanding teaching and interpretive skills and experience and comfort with instructional technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to promote, embrace, and respect ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity and to accommodate physical and intellectual disabilities.
- Strong knowledge of natural history.
Nice to Have’s:
- Expertise or experience working in an American Camp Association camp setting.
- Expertise or experience in early childhood education.
- Knowledge of southeastern Massachusetts habitats and natural history.
- Experience with culturally responsive teaching.
- Experience working and teaching with live animals.
- Familiarity with Massachusetts Science Frameworks.
- Experience working in a regulated childcare or summer camp program where there were opportunities for managing health care, program development, camper/staff supervision, and camper behavior management.
Compensation & Benefits
This position’s base salary range is $21.00 - $23.65; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.
