Vashon Nature Center’s mission is to provide transformative nature experiences through research, community science, and education for the benefit of our island home and the entire Salish Sea. We are a dynamic and growing organization dedicated to helping transform cultural attitudes towards nature in positive and creative ways and to foster a more beneficial relationship with nature and our earth support systems. The Education Assistant helps the Education Director coordinate and teach school programs, assists in running and teaching naturalist workshops, and helps coordinate and run community science programs. This position works closely with both the Education Director and Science Director to integrate strong science-based educational components into all our school, community science, and community outreach programs. As a small nonprofit, all staff including the two co-directors may also be asked to help in other capacities as they come up and if time allows.

Primary Responsibilities:
● Education program support for school and community instruction including curricula development, preparation
and care of educational materials, instruction, and training services
● Maintenance and coordination of equipment and supplies relevant to educational programs
● Public programs coordination under the guidance of the co-directors including community events and workshops
● Developing program schedules with support from the co-directors
● Support the Development Assistant in crafting outreach related to education programs
● Assist in the oversight of interns and education volunteers
● Summer camp coordination and instruction for youth outdoor education camps

Required qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree in an education-related field, science, or related field, or significant life experience
● At least one year of experience as an educator in a formal or informal learning environment
● Bi-lingual in English and Spanish or other languages desired
● Cultivation of a strong personal relationship with nature and enjoyment of being outside
● Curious, compassionate, community-minded, and welcoming of people from diverse backgrounds
● Pacific Northwest and Salish Sea natural history knowledge
● Proficiency in MS Office or Google Suites applications

● Interpersonal skills including excellent written and verbal communication
● Organized, self-motivated, and clear communication skills
● Program planning and implementation experience
● Social Media outreach experience
● Graphic design skills

Reports To: The Education Programs Assistant reports to the Education Director

Compensation Information

Compensation and benefits:
● Rate: $20-23/hr based on experience and organizational fit
● 0.50-1 FTE based on 32 hours/week
● Benefits include flexible time off, a 32-hr work week, and a transportation stipend
● No other benefits, room, or board
