Come discover the wonder of nature through the eyes of a young child! Our Outdoor Learning Environments will inspire your creativity as you apply existing skills and learn new skills to manage gardens and natural spaces for child engagement.

Summary

Early Childhood Outdoor Learning Environment (OLE) Volunteers and Interns support Dallas Zoo’s Early Childhood Education team with the care and maintenance of garden and natural areas used for young children. Horticultural tasks include watering, planting, harvesting, weeding, and composting, both with and without the children’s involvement, and in the process, volunteers and interns patiently guide children in connecting with the insects and animals found in those settings. This placement is ideal for people who have prior gardening experience and knowledge, and who seek to share that experience with preschool-aged children. The Zoo’s internship program additionally engages college students and post-graduates in site-based conservation education. Tasks include the ability to bend, stoop, lift, carry, stand for long periods. An additional fingerprint-based background check and a signed affidavit are required for the licensed preschool. Dallas Zoo is open in all weather conditions and volunteers should come prepared for inclement weather.
