Each graduate is prepared as an environmental leader through academic study and research immersed in urban communities. Summary
Antioch University Seattle seeks a Director for the Urban Environmental Studies Masters program. The Urban Environmental Studies program at Antioch University Seattle is committed to anti-racist pedagogy and to centering racial justice in our work, study and practice.
The Director will oversee our program in Urban Environmental Education at Antioch University Seattle and provide administrative support to the Urban Sustainability MA degree at Antioch University Los Angeles. The Director will also work collaboratively with School faculty on the west coast and in New England to create new and innovative academic programs that will prepare students to advance environmental justice and engage in efforts around climate change. The successful candidate will have a full-time faculty appointment in addition to administrative responsibilities and will report directly to the Dean of the School of the Environment.
The position requires academic experience in Environmental Studies, a deep understanding of multicultural approaches, organizational skill, and a great deal of innovation and creativity. The expectation is that the Director will help develop and implement new approaches to current programs in Urban Environmental Studies, transitioning to low-residency and hybrid models, and create new programs that leverage the considerable strengths of current faculty throughout Antioch’s School of the Environment (New England, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Seattle). The ability to collaborate with faculty at a distance and to build and participate in an academic community that is fully interdisciplinary is essential.
The new leader will provide oversight of academic programs that are designed to support professional development in leadership and education leading to mastery working within urban systems. Our programs will immerse students in a range of different urban systems and their intersecting environmental issues including climate, migration, biodiversity, water, equitable policy development, urban infrastructure and more.
The successful candidate will be skilled in listening to and engaging with diverse communities and will provide academic support for Participatory Action Research and Community-based Practicums. Urban Environmental Studies at Antioch is intentionally multi-cultural and anti-racist in philosophy and practice, and so the successful candidate must practice inclusion and equitable management.
