St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center is an Episcopal ministry consisting of retreat facilities, summer camp, and the Barrier Island Environmental Education Program. Founded in 1981, this program is a Lowcountry institution that welcomes thousands of students each year for overnight educational experiences. We are seeking a Director for our BI Program to begin this summer. The ideal candidate is an organized, energetic leader with a heart for education, the environment, and mentoring young adults, and is also aligned with our values as an Episcopal institution, including: a commitment to welcoming all people; growing our environmental stewardship; and fostering a community based on love, belonging, and connection.

Summary

Specific Duties:

  • Responsible for the overall vision, leadership, and management of the Barrier Island Environmental Education Program
  • Supervise the Assistant Barrier Island Director, Outdoor Encounters Coordinator, and a team of 12-16 naturalists (recent college graduates who live on-site from August to May)
  • Recruit, hire, and train naturalists each school year, including: conducting training on all curricula; regularly assessing teaching ability; creating a weekly schedule for all naturalists; implementing professional development opportunities; working with Senior Naturalists to select and implement individual projects; providing weekly spiritual formation opportunity in collaboration with the Executive Director
  • Coordinate with Facilities, Guest Services, and Food Services for program needs
  • Schedule and welcome schools bi-weekly and conduct meal-time and adult orientations
  • Represent the Barrier Island Program in the wider community, including visiting Episcopal communities with the Executive Director and attending Diocesan Convention annually
  • Supervise the maintenance of an on-site Herpetarium and Aquarium, including animal husbandry for captive reptiles, amphibians, and fish
  • Maintain all permits for captive alligators and sea turtle skull/carapace/scute possession
  • Plan and oversee annual Barrier Island budget and expenses
  • Supervise maintenance of trail accessibility and signage by naturalists

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree
    • Preferred degrees are in scientific disciplines (biology, environmental science, etc.) or education
    • Master’s degrees preferred
  • Experienced educator, in either classroom or nontraditional settings
    • Experience with outdoor education preferred
  • Experience with managing a team, especially young adults/recent college graduates
  • Demonstrated commitment to creation care and environmental stewardship
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Exceptional oral, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to collaborate as part of a team of directors at St. Christopher
  • Alignment with the mission and values of St. Christopher and the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina
    • Familiarity with the Episcopal tradition is preferred
  • Ordained candidates (deacon/priest in the Episcopal Church or communion partner) are welcome to apply
    • Please note that ordination is not a requirement of this position and lay candidates will be considered equally along with ordained candidates

 

Other Requirements

  • This position is in-person for an average of 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday, year-round
    • Some weekend duties are required - no more than once/month - which will be scheduled in consultation with the Executive Director
    • Compensatory time off will be granted for work performed on a weekend
    • Please note that the Barrier Island Program does not hold classes or employ naturalists during the summer months while camp is in session
  • Able to travel to meetings and conferences as needed
  • Attend weekly staff chapel

Compensation Information

$45,000 - 50,000 with on-campus housing/utilities provided, or $60,000 - 64,000 without on-campus housing; health, dental, and life insurance and pension benefits; 20 days PTO annually
