Summary
Join our grassroots outdoor education organization in shaping the lives of rural youth and communities. We are a small mighty team of dedicated staff and AWESOME volunteers who are building a stronger community. Enjoy a beautiful small-town with easy access to outdoor recreation. Want to hike on your lunch break? GPI’s STrEaMs (Science, technology, recreation, engineering, art, mathematics, and skill building) programs utilize the transformative potential of the outdoors to empower youth through action-based learning to build resilient communities and ecosystems. Join us!
GPI is a direct response to tragedy: the tragic 2014 Oso Landslide combined with decades of increasing poverty, a household income at almost half the state average, and disenfranchised youth. Additionally, education cuts eliminated 1/3 of the teachers and youth lacked exposure to outdoors despite beingsurrounded by mountains and rivers. The community’s greatest assets were identified: youth, forests, and recreation. That summer, members of the community supported by partners from business, government, social services and education, designed and launched an outdoor youth STEM pilot program to invest & strengthen these assets through empowering students to develop infrastructure and scientific knowledge endemically through hands-on, practical-based projects contributing to the ecological and economic regeneration of their community. This became Glacier Peak Institute. The Curriculum Coordinator and Development VISTA will focus on the growth mindset model for youth to become creative problem solvers and explorers. The position is vital to increasing the capacity of GPI to better serve our community as well as to replicate this curriculum in other struggling rural communities. After participating in our programs, youth leave school excited to share their outdoor lessons, and feel empowered to explore the forests and rivers around us. Tomorrow, they will be shaping the futures of their communities.
Member Duties: You are responsible for GPI’s curriculum. Given many rural school districts are in financial hardship, you are tasked with creating innovative programs focused on ecosystems and our partners. Your position will leverage community connections and resources. The role is vital to ensuring underprivileged and marginalized youth have access to educational and recreational opportunities You will: Break the cycle of poverty by building resilient communities and ecosystems while contributing to the lives of disadvantaged youth Coordinate curriculum and programs for school STrEaMs activities and Growth Mindset Initiate new programs leveraging expertise, and finding creative ways to utilize the surrounding environment Actively communicate with partners Develop replicable materials to be shared in other struggling geographic locations Provide guidelines, protocols & best practices Work w/ a team Create bridges between communities such as urban and rural Utilize outdoor recreation
