Summary
Department Summary & Job Purpose:
As a leader and active partner within the Miller Worley Center for the Environment, the Curator of Education and Outreach is responsible for developing a creative, mission-driven strategy that values authentic experiences with the Campus Living Lab (CLL) to position the Center as a vibrant hub for self-discovery, hands-on exploration, and interdisciplinary learning. As a key member of the Miller Worley Center for the Environment, the Curator of Education and Outreach will work both independently and as part of a team to generate innovative, dynamic, creative approaches to audience engagement with the CLL and the Center, broadly. This position will broaden our reach and strengthen our mission by fostering relationships across campus and with local community members.
Core Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The Curator of Education and Outreach will be responsible for the development and implementation of curricular opportunities for the Center including the Campus Living Lab. This will involve outreach with and general coordination among departments, instructors, classes, MHC organizations and public audiences. The Curator will prepare budgets and coordinate logistics for curricular events and collaborations, direct interpretation of the Campus Living Lab trails and associated spaces, and oversee related student staff and student projects.
Curricular Development: The Curator identifies and creates interdisciplinary curricular opportunities that address MHC learning goals in collaboration with faculty, departments and divisions across campus; Develops, implements and evaluates class activities and exercises using the CLL and Environmental Monitoring Program; Supports class, organization and independent student research projects with mentorship and guidance; Connects MHC and public audiences with appropriate data and resources for inquiry and hands-on exploration, including quantitative data from the Environmental Monitoring Program.
Community Outreach: The Curator is responsible for promoting awareness of the Campus Living Lab and its educational and recreational uses; Creates and leads tours for campus members and visitors; Creates interpretive signage and guides for public audiences.
Summer Programming: The Curator develops curricular programming that allows local youth to engage with our Campus Living Lab over the summer; Oversees a team of students to help implement the program; Responsible for outreach to the local community and recruiting participants.
Interpretation: The Curator oversees all phases of the interpretive content development process, including concept generation, design, delivery, evaluation, and documentation.
Qualifications:
• Proven ability to design, implement and evaluate educational curriculum, ideally in an environmental program or closely related setting
• Considerable experience creating collaborative events and programs that intersect with a variety of disciplines and stakeholders throughout an organization and in the community
• Experience with citizen science, community science, or community-based learning
• Background or experience in the natural sciences, environmental science, or science/environmental education
• Must have an authentic belief in and support of accessibility and equity for diverse audiences and learning styles
• Must have cultural knowledge of diverse populations
• Must have knowledge of ecosystem functioning and ecosystem health
• Experience with species identification and data management is highly desirable
Preferred Qualifications:
• M.S. or M.A. required (Ph.D preferred) and 3+ years of relevant experience
• Minimum 2 years’ experience managing, designing and implementing educational programs, preferably in a multidisciplinary school or community-based setting
