The Coordinator of Teen Programs assists with the development, delivery, and management of the Museum’s educational efforts and partnerships for programming with middle and high school audiences. Programs are focused on career exploration, expanding natural history knowledge, and leadership development. The Museum has a variety of opportunities for teens that vary in length from seasonal to year-long in duration.

Summary

Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Coordinator of Teen Programs assists with the development, delivery, and management of the Museum’s educational efforts and partnerships for programming with middle and high school audiences. Programs are focused on career exploration, expanding natural history knowledge, and leadership development. The Museum has a variety of opportunities for teens that vary in length from seasonal to year-long in duration.
 
This position reports to the Head of Youth Programs and is responsible for mentoring, scheduling, training, and managing teen volunteers, and supervising interns.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and present STEM career and natural science programs, classes, and volunteer opportunities for teen audiences.
  • Ensure that programs run smoothly and safely in accordance with Museum guidelines and procedures.
  • Conduct orientations and train participants for volunteer job duties, with a focus on skill building (e.g., public speaking, communication, presentation, etc.)
  • Manage and maintain educational resources used in programs such as outdoor equipment, craft supplies, and environmental sampling equipment.
  • Create and manage schedules for meetings, seminars, and workdays for teen program participants.
  • Network and engage with community partners, including schools and universities, community centers, philanthropic organizations, etc. to pursue student recruitment and program support.      

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift or move up to 20 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to navigate uneven terrain on foot.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle at night.
  • Valid Wilderness First Aid and/or First Aid/CPR certification, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

  • Demonstrated experience planning, developing, and facilitating educational programs. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with middle and high school youth in an educational setting.
  • Professional experience training or teaching groups.
  • Skilled in managing program materials and equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience with calendar management.      

Management Prefers:
 

  • Demonstrated experience leading group programs in outdoor settings.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience in a professional setting.
  • Knowledge of North Carolina and other southeastern U.S. environments, including their natural history and ecology.  

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of museum or related work
or
an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Compensation Information

Recruitment Range $33,272 - $48,238
