Summary
The internship is 20 hours per week from mid-May to mid-August. (If needed, contact JSP Program Director for questions regarding flexibility on hours per week or start/end dates.) Intern is responsible for managing their time to complete tasks as assigned. Professional development opportunities and training are provided as needed in the areas of environmental education, land management, and native plant and wildlife identification.
Summary of Essential Job Functions (*may change due to COVID-19):
- Help maintain park grounds to enhance native wildlife habitat.
- Assist in land management projects, such as planting and caring for native plants, addressing erosion issues, maintaining walking trails, mowing, weed eating, removing invasive plant species, maintaining JSP’s Bird Feeder stations, and assisting with monitoring and maintaining JSP’s Bluebird Trail.
- Assist Program Director and contracted teaching artists in facilitating environmental education programs, including the summer sessions of Art in Nature Camp.
- Lead and/or provide assistance for monthly tours, including the First Sunday Nature Tour, Night Sky Tour, and Park Tour.
- Assist staff, interns and volunteers in event setup, coordination and teardown, as needed.*
- Represent JSP info/activity booth during partner events in the community, as needed.*
- Document intern projects and reflections for social media and website content.
Minimum Requirements: Passion for the mission of the organization. Excellent communicator. Flexible. Enjoy engaging with the public, including youth. Willing to work independently and with a team. Willing to work hard outdoors and learn new skills that involve manual labor. Preferred (but not required) experiences: some college; landscaping, trail maintenance, or related; teaching.
Compensation: Primitive housing on park grounds is available but optional. Some work may be completed remotely. We will work with you and your institution to offer internship/course credit. We encourage you to apply for internship funding through your institution. (Monthly stipend may become available, depending on available funds.
