Conservation Education Naturalist Internship

Internships include planning and leading daily interpretive tours for various groups, including K-12 schools, community organizations, private groups, and individuals. When not involved with these tours, your time will be spent on informal interpretation to create meaningful visitor experiences. You will also be responsible for scheduling group tours and promoting events like our Cranes of the World Celebration, Good Neighbor Day, and The Great Midwest Crane Fest. Additionally, you will help with other department goals, objectives, and duties, such as developing projects, creating educational resources, and assisting with volunteer coordination.

The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to speak persuasively to diverse audiences, whether in person or virtually. Strong organizational skills are key, as you will need to manage projects, track progress, and ensure that deadlines are met. You should be detail-oriented, capable of managing both small and large projects, and demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility and teamwork. A positive attitude and adaptability are essential, especially as you will need to adjust to changes in the work environment and duties. Additionally, you will need to inspire trust and respect, working with integrity and ethics while contributing to a positive work culture.

Qualifications

We prefer candidates with two years of college education, especially in fields such as interpretation, environmental education, conservation biology, ornithology, education, or digital marketing. However, applicants with relevant experience are also encouraged to apply. A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required, along with eligibility to work in the U.S. when applying. Previous experience with outreach activities or working with volunteers is a plus. Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and familiarity with Zoom and Teams is beneficial. Exceptional public speaking skills and the ability to teach in a non-formal setting are essential for this role.

The position runs from mid-March through November 2026, with some flexibility in start and end dates, and includes a stipend of $1,550/month plus housing
