We are looking for a dynamic educator to help us continue a 30+ year legacy of community-based environmental education in Anacortes, WA! Live and work in the gateway to the San Juan Islands, and immerse yourself in a near-3000 acre community forest with a long history of grassroots stewardship.

Summary

Position: Community Programs Assistant

Location: Anacortes, WA

Schedule: This is a permanent, part-time position with seasonally-flexible hours. During the summer camp season, the Community Programs Assistant will work a maximum of 36 hours per week. Throughout the remainder of the calendar year, this position will work 16 - 20 hours per week. Regular weekend and evening work is expected.

The Friends of the Anacortes Community Forest Lands is a non-profit citizens organization dedicated to the preservation of the Anacortes Community Forest Lands (ACFL) through education, outreach, and stewardship. Position Summary
Friends of the ACFL is seeking a dynamic educator excited about delivering inspiring environmental education programs for all ages as our Community Programs Assistant. With direction and support from the existing education team, the Community Programs Assistant will lead engaging education programs both outdoors in the ACFL and from the Forest Discovery Center in downtown Anacortes. This position will also support the delivery of 6 weeks of Forest Discovery Summer Camp for youth ages 6 - 14. The ideal candidate will bring vision, creativity, and a commitment to operating mindfully with our engaged community in a small team setting.

Core Duties & Responsibilities

  • With direction from the Community Programs Supervisor, plan, organize, and lead community education hikes, events, classes, stewardship activities, and/or community science programs
  • Support youth education programs by assisting with program preparation, delivery and reflection, participant engagement, and supporting the Youth Education Coordinator in the field
  • Staff and assist Forest Discovery Center operations
  • Support and supervise volunteers during programs, events, and in the Forest Discovery Center
  • Support the management of participant records, forms, registrations, and program logistics 

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest in local natural history topics, and a willingness to learn. Relevant formal education or professional experience preferred. Minimum high school diploma.
  • Comfortable working with people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds in outdoor and trail-based settings.
  • Strong group management, conflict resolution, and risk assessment skills, or a willingness to learn
  • Strong organizational and communications skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Reliable transport to and from trailheads across Fidalgo Island
  • Commitment to the organization’s mission and values.
  • Physical ability to walk several miles outdoors in variable weather and terrain
  • Physical ability to lift and carry 40 pounds, and 25 pounds for an extended period of time.
  • First Aid/CPR certification required; Wilderness First Aid preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Must pass state and federal background checks.  

Compensation Information

Compensation: $18 - 20 per hour
