As the Coastal Engagement and Training Specialist, you’ll work directly with decision-makers and professionals whose roles influence the health of coastal resources within the Apalachicola Watershed. This program aims to foster stewardship by equipping stakeholders to make informed choices that protect and sustain resources in the lower Apalachicola watershed. You'll engage with diverse stakeholders including coastal land managers, local residents, the seafood industry, private enterprises, watershed organizations, water management districts, nonprofits, and officials at local, state, and federal levels.

Florida State University Coastal & Marine Lab is located on the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast in a relatively undeveloped area of rich biological diversity one hour south of the FSU main campus in Tallahassee. This position is located in Eastpoint, Florida at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Responsibilities

The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) Coastal Training Program (CTP). This position provides up-to-date scientific information and skill-building opportunities for collaborative networks of decision-makers and professionals whose work and decisions have impacts on coastal resources in northwest Florida, specifically the Apalachicola Watershed. The goal of CTP section is to transfer science conducted at ANERR, NOAA and the Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection (FLDEP) to stakeholders enabling them to make and implement decisions that protect the environment. Stakeholders served by CTP include local, state, and federal government officials, elected officials, planners, coastal managers, seafood industry, private industry, watershed groups, water management districts, residents, and nonprofit organizations. 

  • Works directly with the CTP Coordinator to provide up-to-date scientific information and skill-building opportunities for collaborative networks of decision makers and professionals; transfers science conducted at ANERR, NOAA and RCP to stakeholders; designs, plans, and coordinates training programs for target audiences; conducts follow-up research.
  • Plans, organizes and coordinates, locally and regionally, workshops and meetings and works with partners to identify needs; provides technical assistance service, training events and facilitation services.
  • Coordinates outreach programs, finds opportunities to integrate FSU research/initiative into Coastal Training program, including the ability to compile printing materials and visual aids for training, information research, workshop development, writing, and/or producing educational materials,
  • Operates vehicles/vessels as needed and assists with efforts to plan, prepare, and respond to extreme weather and impacts to ANERR and regional facilities.

Qualifications

A high school diploma/equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)

Ability to move/lift up to 25 lbs. carrying and lifting field equipment, displays for special events and outreach activities.

Valid Florida/Georgia Driver's License or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to demonstrate effective customer service skills, and positive attitude.
  • Ability to add workshops, programs, and other information to the website and social media.
