Summary

Looking for the type of exciting, outdoor, hands-on internship experience that puts you out in the salt marsh or splashing in the intertidal zone looking for marine organisms? If so, this is the job for you! Join CBFS's summer team as a Coastal Education and Leadership Program Assistant. CELP Assistants gain valuable supervisory skills by helping manage our high school internship program, gain experience leading groups of all ages and teaching a diverse array of topics, and are given the opportunity to network with professionals in the field.
Position dates: June 4 - August 11, 2023
Our Coastal Education and Leadership Program Assistant will achieve valuable supervisory experience as they help to manage our high school intern program. They will also gain experience leading groups of all ages and teaching a diverse array of topics that highlight the dynamic ecosystems of a barrier island. Coastal Education and Leadership Program Assistants work alongside program staff to provide a diverse range of educational and scientific program experiences. Program activities are varied and may include kayaking and canoeing, nature hikes, marsh-mucking, boat trips, campfires, science labs, seining and trawling, skit nights, marine organism collection, water testing and sampling, island tours, etc. Coastal Education and Leadership Program Assistants will also have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with outreach programming, network with professionals in the marine and environmental science field, and assist with University & Research programming and college courses. You will gain valuable and diverse knowledge regarding aquarium and field equipment use and maintenance, group leadership skills, and build a solid base of education experience. Apartment style lodging with max. one roommate is provided and meals are available when the dining hall is open.
REQUIREMENTS
- Current college student or recent graduate enrolled in Education, Outdoor Recreation, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Biology, or other related field
- Ability to connect with, encourage, and direct participants of all ages
- Energetic, enthusiastic, and motivated
- Ability to make quick decisions and enforce rules
- Willingness to work long hours with program participants in various weather conditions
- Valid driver’s license
- 19 or older
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 21 or older
- CPR and First Aid Certification
- Camp or education experience
- Previous supervisory experience
- Desire to pursue environmental or experiential education
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift 50lbs
- Ability to walk a mile on uneven terrain
- Ability to stand and work for long periods of time
- Ability to work in extreme conditions (heat, mosquitoes, etc)
- Ability to work long days and on weekends
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist Education Department staff in leading Intergenerational summer camps
- Supervise high school aged CELP Interns, including RA duties, supervision, off-time excursions, and more
- Assist CELP interns as they navigate what is potentially their first working experience
- Office work, registration, check-in, set up, break down of programs
- Support Educators in art, science, or outdoor activities and throughout the day
- Collaborate and cooperate with fellow staff members to provide a positive program experience for participants
- Deliver age-appropriate environmental education programming to individuals of all ages
- Work a flexible schedule, including weekend and evening activities
- Other duties as assigned
