Summary
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is hiring for seasonal Nature Center Education Assistants. There are currently 15 openings spanning five county facilities: Reedy Creek Nature Center, Eastway Regional Recreation Center, Stevens Creek Nature Center, McDowell Nature Center, and Quest at Latta Nature Preserve.
• 10-month seasonal positions (beginning any time between Feb-April)
• 3-month seasonal positions (June-Aug)

Position details: Duties and schedules vary by center. Expect to work a full-time schedule during summer (35-40 hrs/week) and a part-time schedule in spring and fall (20-30 hours). Some evening and weekend work is required.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with developing and facilitating environmental education, outdoor adventure, and summer day camp programs to include curricular school programs, paddlesports, outreach programs, and hiking.
- Work with a wide variety of audiences with different ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
- Assist with the care and feeding of exhibit and program animals.
- Assist with customer service duties including answering visitor questions and working the cash register.
- Present programs on weekends, evenings, or holidays as assigned.
- Assist with special events, garden maintenance, and other tasks as assigned.
- May be required to transport participants in agency vehicle.
Qualifications: Qualified applicants must have or be working toward a BS/BA degree in one of the following fields: natural/environmental sciences, environmental education, recreation or related field.
The ideal candidate is/has:
- Self-motivated and passionate about parks, recreation, and nature
- Flexible and team-oriented
- Willing to learn and take chances
- Experience in environmental education or outdoor recreation programming
- A strong desire to work with children in an outdoor setting
- Able to travel 3-5 miles on unpaved trails.
- Current first aid and CPR certification
- Knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Piedmont region of North Carolina

Compensation Information
$15/hr
