Summary
MANAGER OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Maymont is a 100-acre historic estate and park, located in Richmond, Virginia, with many unique experiences for all to enjoy, including the historic Maymont Mansion, The Robins Nature Center, arboretum, formal gardens, and habitats for native Virginia wildlife and farm animals. With seasonal events, programs and rental spaces, over 800,000 guests enjoy Maymont yearly. Since 1975, Maymont has been maintained and operated by the nonprofit Maymont Foundation, committed to creating experiences that delight, educate and inspire its guests.
The Maymont Foundation seeks a Manager of Environmental Education to partner with school systems and community organizations who serve underrepresented communities. We strive to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in all elements of our programming. Maymont seeks an experienced manager to oversee the development and implementation of all Maymont environmental and outdoor education programs. This is a leadership position with supervisory, administrative, department planning and revenue generation responsibilities. This position reports to the Director of Programming and Community Engagement.
Essential Functions Include:
- The Manager of Environmental Education will work collaboratively with the Manager of Historical Education to provide public and group programs throughout the estate.
- Develop and implement a dynamic annual schedule of environmental and outdoor education programs incorporating STEM, Project-Based Learning and visitor engaging strategies for a wide variety of audiences with a focus on high quality content and revenue generation.
- Conduct program evaluations to keep programs fresh and relevant for a variety of market segments.
- Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate staff, volunteers, and interns.
- Assist in writing and editing interpretive signage for wildlife exhibits on the grounds and in the Nature Center.
- Assist in writing grant proposals and implementing grant funded projects to improve accessibility to environmental education programming in communities of color.
- Strategic thinking in inclusion and diversity initiatives based on community input and assessments.
- Regularly participate in programs through teaching and in special events. Perform duties of an Environmental Educator as needed and in the absence of other education department staff.
- Coordinate and provide proper animal care and training to education animals under the direction of the Senior Manager of Zoology.
- Participates in Maymont Tent Pole Events as needed, which may be outside of regular work schedule.
- Participate in the development and implementation of budgeting and purchasing for the environmental education area.

Core competencies:
- Ability to effectively supervise a diverse staff.
- Experience handling tame, domestic or exotic animals including reptiles.
- Entrepreneurial spirit to seek and maintain fee-based programs.
- Conversational Spanish is preferred.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, sciences, education or related field with four years of experience managing environmental education and natural history interpretation.
- Experience in program planning and implementation with specific experience in STEM and Project-Based Learning. Well-rounded knowledge of Virginia watersheds, wildlife, habitats, native plants and other environmental topics.
- Prior administrative duties including budget development and implementation and grant project management preferred.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking and talking for extended periods
- Frequent climbing, bending, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work inside and outside in all-weather conditions.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
