The LOTT Clean Water Alliance is hiring a full-time Environmental Educator. This position supports LOTT’s education program and the WET Science Center by being responsible for creating and delivering school programs and educational activities for all ages. This role supports day-to-day operations of the WET Science Center, community engagement, and outreach. This is an excellent opportunity for an environmental educator interested in helping community members learn about a vital resource – water. Summary

Function:  Under direct supervision of the Education Program Manager, this position is responsible for the planning, or assisting with planning, developing, and implementing a broad range of public education activities and programming that further LOTT's mission and goals.    

Series Concept:  The Environmental Educator I is the entry-level classification in the Education Program series, which includes Environmental Educator I, II, and III. Environmental Educator Is have some prior experience performing K-12 informal education duties. EE Is may require more oversight, on-the-job coaching, and assistance to perform education functions than the higher classifications. The role is generally one of supporting the education program by assisting with planning and implementing activities and projects.

Environmental Educator IIs are fully skilled educators, with specialized knowledge to effectively assist the Education Program Manager to plan and implement educational programs, activities, and projects. EE IIs perform at a more advanced and independent level than the lower classification.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts day-to-day operations of the WET Science Center; greets WET Center visitors at the front desk; interacts with visitors of all-ages to engage visitors and facilitate learning; monitors use of exhibit gallery and classroom; conducts routine cleaning/sanitizing of WET Science Center display components;
  • Plays an integral role in LOTT’s school programs as part of LOTT’s partnership with local school districts; delivers youth educational programming; guides facility and building tours; provides oversight for visiting student groups;
  • Develops and delivers educational programs, presentations, and activities for WET Center visitors, youth groups, Saturday programs, virtual programming, and special events as assigned; 
  • Participates in community partner education and outreach events as assigned;
  • Develops education and outreach materials for varied audiences, such as booklets, newsletters, promotional materials, posters and flyers, displays, advertising, and other materials as assigned; 
  • Maintains and orders supplies and materials for the WET Science Center and education program;
  • Supports the WET Science Center’s volunteer program by assisting with volunteer recruiting, training, and scheduling, oversight, and assignment of work; 
  • Assists with monitoring and maintaining the WET Science Center social media presence; 
  • Performs data entry related to program tracking and evaluation;
  • Participates in a variety of interagency and community meetings as requested;
  • Provides WET Center reception and supports general front desk functions by greeting visitors, and answering multi-line telephone system, answering or directing queries from the public, staff, and customers;
  • Demonstrates regular and reliable attendance; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:  This position works Tuesday through Saturday with occasional evening hours. This position may require occasional, temporary Monday through Friday schedule and/or teleworking at times. This position works primarily in an office setting, but is required to work in all areas of LOTT facilities. Work includes traveling to offsite community locations and LOTT facilities in order to meet with community partners, give presentations, and accompany tour groups. Due to the size and configuration of LOTT facilities, the ability to climb stairs and sufficient agility to safely navigate uneven terrain and slippery surfaces both indoors and outdoors is required. This position may be exposed to a variety of health and safety conditions including toxic, corrosive, and combustible fumes and chemicals, high voltage equipment, and raw sewage. The physical ability to carry or otherwise transport heavy boxes, displays, exhibit furnishings, and equipment is required.

  • Proficiency with computer software, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook;
  • Proficiency with online tools and social media, including Survey Monkey, Mail Chimp, Hootsuite, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Zoom, Google Hangouts.
  • Proficient in Adobe suite tools, or the ability to learn

  • Engage audiences of all ages in learning about and supporting LOTT’s mission and services;
  • Develop and lead educational activities in a classroom setting for a variety of age groups and audiences;
  • Understand and follow instructions and seek clarification when necessary;
  • Interact with the public (pre-school through adult) and communicate educational messages in a friendly, positive, and professional manner;
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule to accommodate routine night and/or weekend hours;
  • Provide for positive visitor experiences by demonstrating professional behavior, answering visitor questions, and conducting safe and engaging programs;
  • Work productively and collaboratively with other LOTT staff and peers, contributing positively to LOTT's team-based culture and to a supportive, productive, and positive workplace;
  • Relate well to middle, high school, and college students;
  • Work independently and as part of a team, including in remote environments when necessary.

Additional Information:

EEI:  Bachelors or Associates degree and relevant experience, preferably with a focus in education, communications, natural sciences, or closely allied field. Must have experience working with K-12 students in a classroom, recreational, and/or educational setting. Knowledge of environmental and/or water-related issues, science, and/or teaching preferred.

EEII:  Bachelor’s degree with major study in education, communications, natural sciences, or closely allied field. Must have the equivalent of at least two years of experience as an Environmental Educator I or other professional experience in education or community outreach, including experience working with K-12 students in a classroom, recreational, and/or educational setting. Knowledge of wastewater treatment, water quality, ecology, and/or related sciences preferred. Experience providing public outreach and communications services for government agencies, utilities, and/or environmental organizations desirable. 
 
Additional Requirements:  Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License within 30 days from date of hire.  Must participate in LOTT’s Health & Safety Program.

Salary $52,319.28 - $81,140.18 Annually
