Do you have youth development, camp leadership, or education experience? Do you want to spend your summer operating, guiding, and developing a vibrant recreation day camp in a beautiful wooded setting in Apalachin NY? If so, you could be Waterman Conservation Education Center’s new Camp Program Director!

Summary

For 47 years, the Waterman Center has provided environmental education and outdoor recreation opportunities to the residents of Broome and Tioga counties.  Our mission is to promote environmental literacy while encouraging people to get outside and enjoy our natural areas.

For over 20 years we’ve offered a 5 week youth recreation day camp during the summer for children between the ages of 6 and 11 which includes games, hikes, crafts, and other activities.  Immediately afterward, we shift gears and offer an additional week of a learning-focused environmental education camp for ages 6-11 focusing on investigation and hands on learning.  This year, the camps will run between July 3rd and August 11th from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

Job Responsibilities:

The Camp Program Director is responsible for the overall operation of the camp, including developing the summer camp program, creating the schedule, managing the staff of camp educators, and managing any crisis or emergency.  The Camp Program Director will work with the Executive Director to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and that the camp safety plan is followed.  The Camp Program Director will also work with the Executive Director to determine the camps’ staffing needs and to interview, hire, and train camp staff.  At the end of the season, the Camp Program Director will work with the Executive Director to analyze and evaluate the camp’s effectiveness based on parent and counselor surveys, the camps goals, and the Camp Program Director’s recommendations.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • 18 years or older.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, natural science, human services, or youth development preferred as well as a knowledge of or interest in nature or the environment.
  • 3-5 years’ experience teaching, leading, or supervising youth with preference to summer camp or recreation experience.
  • 3-5 years management or supervisory experience.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Current (or ability to obtain) first aid and CPR certifications
  • Ability to work outside during summer while sometimes negotiating steep and/or uneven terrain.
