The School of the Environment at Antioch University invites applications for a full-time appointment as Internship, Community Outreach and Career Support Director within this innovative, interdisciplinary graduate department. The director will primarily serve the Department of Environmental Studies at Antioch University New England. This position focuses on graduate student mentorship, outreach, organizational networking and management of our professional internship program, collaborative service capstone projects, and career services. We seek a highly collaborative, creative staff member eager to develop students professional acumen within and beyond our learning community. This colleague is committed to social justice, equity and inclusive education with excellent communication skills, program management, student mentorship and advising abilities. They also have a passion for engaging community members across network platforms-face-to-face, virtual, social media and otherwise-to share about our excellent students and organizational efforts. Deep curiosity and willingness to learn about the evolving complexities and skills required across varied environmental fields and professional contexts are pluses. We want to work and learn alongside this colleague so we best equip students with learning experiences that establish them as effective professionals, leaders and change agents engaged in meaningful livelihoods well beyond Antioch.
The Environmental Studies Department at AUNE educates visionary, effective leaders in a collaborative interdisciplinary setting, founded on academic excellence and principles of justice and sustainability. Our department is aware of the long and well-documented history of the ways in which the environmental movement, particularly in the United States, has oppressed cultures, peoples and voices, which has prevented some groups from fully participating and contributing to environmental issues. And environmental problems disproportionately impact historically marginalized groups-including People of Color, people from working class backgrounds, Indigenous communities, persons with disabilities, women and LGBTQIA people. We believe these communities must be centered in our work and scholarship. Key Responsibilities
(50%) Direct the Environmental Studies Professional Internship Program. Serve as the primary point of contact to facilitate and support students securing high quality professional internships that complement their graduate studies, interests and passions. Related responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Plan, implement, supervise, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate relevant activities and functions of the Internship Program.
- Maintain existing internship opportunities board for students. An ability to enhance and develop a more sophisticated internship listing encouraged.
- Teach one internship section per semester and evaluate student work.
- Identify, hire and mentor additional internship section faculty.
- Mentor and collaborate with faculty internship advisors to develop pedagogy that aligns with student learning outcomes and internship experiences.
- Collaborate with colleagues and students to envision an innovative Internship Office that evolves to meet the demands of the interdisciplinary field of environmental studies.
- Organize internship and job fairs (virtual and/or in person) or similar networking events to connect organizations and students interested in internship opportunities.
(25%) Community Outreach & External Relations
Direct the Collaborative Service Initiative (CSI) capstone option for masters students, an integral part of the department. Responsibilities include:
- Overall program management and evaluation.
- Solicitation and quality assurance of organizational applications.
- Work with faculty in proposal selection and faculty mentor assignment.
- Maintain an active list of CSI opportunities each fall
- Communicate CSI expectations for participating students, selected organizations, and faculty advisors (e.g., update and distribute CSI Handbook).
- Support social media outreach, communications and external relations, which facilitate students ability to identify and secure meaningful livelihoods and professional careers.
- Coordinate, hire and supervise student employees who will curate social media communications; craft and distribute the departmental newsletter (1-2/year) and annual centers report.
- Provide opportunities for AUNE students and alumni to network and learn from each other. Networking could take the form of virtual events for the Antioch community; Annual "Internship Fair" (virtual or in-person); and/or other innovative approaches to professional networking.
- Represent and network on behalf of environmental studies students, faculty and staff in a variety of contexts (e.g., conference exhibits, community meetings).
(25%) Career Support Services
- Teach both the essentials and the subtleties of job-hunting and communication. This can be through direct expertise (i.e, job search skills, background in human resources) and/or indirectly (e.g., hiring external specialists; internal collaboration with faculty and staff)
- Develop and maintain an interactive, comprehensive, timely job board for students and alumni
- Director is encouraged and responsible for enhancing students ability to effectively network and tap into relevant job opportunities.
- Enhance students capacity to broadcast their expertise and interests. Sample task may be to work with other Antioch personnel to support students ability to design personal web pages that highlight their skills, interests and capacity to contribute to specific professional networks and organizations.
- Systematic and regular tracking of job requirements and availability-regionally, nationally, globally. This task entails careful review of notices and advertising openings to ascertain patterns and changes in patterns of demand for particular types of expertise and skills.
- Assist with web page curation and IT requests to address issues and request relevant updates.
- Ability to network and collaborate within Antioch University Schools, Department of Environmental Studies, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally to best ensure students professional skills and capacities are improved throughout their graduate studies and beyond.
- Participate actively in departmental community and events to best ensure synergy and collegiality (e.g., participate in department meetings; serve on committees).
- Confer regularly with School Dean, department chair, faculty and/or staff, as well as relevant university personnel/offices to plan, coordinate and evaluate projects/activities, exchange information, investigate and resolve problems that may arise.
Required Qualifications and Experiences
- Masters degree in environmental field or other appropriate discipline, plus one to two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion and justice.
- Passion for mentoring graduate students with varied environmental interests (e.g., conservation biology, education, policy, advocacy, humanities).
- Savvy social media curation and outreach capacities. Ability to effectively navigate existing and developing social media platforms.
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Experiential teaching experience, graduate curriculum design or program development skills
- Ability to assess and match student skills and interests with internship site needs.
- Familiarity with career services, coaching and/or career success strategies.
- Effective time management, administrative, technical, and organizational skills.
- Good computer and data management skills for recordkeeping and reporting.
- Strong student advising and mentorships skills and experience.
- Online technical skills or ability to learn them (e.g., webpage design and editing; learning management platform)
- Ability to build new and enhance existing relationships with constituents inside and outside of an organization
- Willingness to proactively develop and implement strategies to increase employment opportunities for students and graduates.
- Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of individuals to carry out the varied coordinating and liaison functions of this position.
- Commitment to continual improvement to inform future programmatic directions and innovations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
General supervision is received from the Administrative Director.
