Summary
Job Purpose
Under the direction of the Park Naturalist, the Assistant Park Naturalist supports operations, maintenance and programming at Westmoor Park, including the care and exhibition of domestic farm animals, and Nature Discovery Room animal collection. Plans, organizes and conducts programs, including environmental education, animal husbandry, sustainability, year-round seasonal activities and summer camps. Primary concerns include the Demonstration Farm and Natural Sciences areas. Work involves irregular working hours and contact with a wide variety of people and groups. General supervision is exercised over part-time supervisors, specialists, program instructors, recreational staff and volunteers.
Work Environment
Work involves the oversight of daily operations and maintenance of the Park's facilities, including the Demonstration Farm, natural areas and buildings, as outlined by the Park Naturalist and the Director of Leisure Services and Social Services. Work is performed indoors and outdoors, including inclement weather. It may be necessary for the Assistant Park Naturalist to reside in the Caretaker's House on the property.
Essential Job Functions/Results
- Assists in the general supervision and administration of Westmoor Park and all related programs.
- Oversees general health, security and environment of the farm animals in accordance with animal care policies and procedures, and maintains statistical records on all the animals, per USDA-required standards.
- Coordinates, supervises and provides technical guidance for personnel engaged in the care and feeding of the farm animals.
- Coordinates Park maintenance activities, considering costs and priorities.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance as needed, making repairs to buildings and equipment, and ensuring facility is safe and clean.
- Initiates, plans, organizes and conducts tours, exhibits or educational programs relating to the Demonstration Farm, Westmoor Arboretum and Natural Sciences.
- Prepares and distributes promotional materials.
- Supports facility operations through special events, grant writing and grant administration.
- Hires, trains, supervises and schedules part-time staff, interns and volunteers in collaboration with the Park Naturalist.
- Conducts wildlife management activities in open space in Town as appropriate, including at Spicebush Swamp Park, Wolcott Children's Forest and other Town parks.
- Provides after-hours security when on site.
- Property maintenance includes assisting with snow removal as needed.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Assists in the general supervision and administration of Westmoor Park and all related programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the characteristics, care, diet and habits of domestic farm animals.
- Knowledge of the care of reptiles, amphibians, small mammals and birds in captivity.
- Knowledge of minor veterinary care requirements of domestic farm animals.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of wildlife management.
- Knowledge of and experience in environmental education and outdoor recreation.
- Ability to operate farm maintenance equipment and utilize maintenance tools.
- Ability to climb ladder.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for short distances.
- Ability to plan and conduct programs that appeal to all age groups.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members, professionals and laymen in the integration of nature activities into the recreational life of the Town.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in animal husbandry, natural sciences, environmental education or closely related field and one (1) year of experience in the care and maintenance of domestic farm animals and outdoor education or five (5) years of the above required experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
