Summary
Position Title: Assistant Director
Department: Cooperative Extension
Location: Greenland Point 4-H Camp and Learning Center
Your Direct Supervisor: Director, Nicole Nelson
Position Type: Full- Time, Temporary (May to August)
Salary Range: $5,000 to $9,600 for the season (7-16 weeks)
Work Environment / Dynamics:
Your position will be based at Greenland Point 4-H Camp and Learning Center in Princeton, Maine. As a Camp Counselor, you will maintain a high level of health and safety for the group while mentoring and coaching youth through a variety of outdoor activities, including canoeing, outdoor cooking, nature exploration, conservation education, fishing, and wilderness survival skills. To thrive in this position, you must genuinely invest in your growth as a positive role model, teaching essential hard skills that empower campers to succeed both in the wilderness and beyond.
Your Work Schedule:
The Assistant Director works a full summer schedule from early to mid May through late August. The Assistant Director resides on-site throughout the season. The Assistant Director generally works Sunday thru Friday with some Saturday work. The Assistant Director receives time off during the program season.
Responsibilities:
- Assume responsibility of the camp in the absence of the Camp Director
- Create a culture of welcome, timeliness and fun at camp
- Encourage conversation and engagement among campers and staff
- Work with Camp Director to support staff meetings
- Work with the Camp Director and Program Staff to plan and implement activities
- Write various camp schedules including camper schedules, staff schedules and time off schedules
- Plan and lead All Camp Evening Programs
- Maintain high standards of health and safety
- Role model positive and fun camp behaviour for campers and staff
- Participate as a member of the camp community
- Work with the Camp Director and Program Coordinators to plan and lead staff training
- Live onsite for the duration of the summer program season
- Know the proper procedures for each emergency and assist with teaching camp staff those procedures
- Participate in all aspects of camp including staff training and post camp clean up
- Assist the Camp Director with checking campers in and out of camp, including mid session pickups and dropoffs
- Supervise the cabin area during evening cabin time supporting the Cabin Leaders and Counselors
- Support weekend work including camper programs and staff trips
- Assist with managing the Health Center including giving care and administering prescribed and over the counter medications
- Support campers experiencing social, emotional, physical and behavioral challenges
- Set a good example for campers and staff in terms of cleanliness, punctuality, manners, appropriate language, appropriate attire, etc.
- Demonstrate sound problem solving techniques
- Help assure that camp programs and facilities meet Maine DHHS Rules
- Provide quality customer service to staff, campers, parents and other visitors
- Plan and lead camper lessons and activities, implementing a curriculum that covers various skills such as listening, communication, team-building, boating skills, and safety, outdoor cooking, conservation education, wilderness survival, map and compass navigation, and general ecology
- Contribute to community living by participating in chores (helping hands), meal service, and any necessary maintenance duties
- Regularly evaluate the program with the Camp Director to enhance the overall camp experience
- Support the Camp Director with additional tasks and projects as needed
Knowledge and Skill Qualifications:
Required:
- Prior experience working in a summer camp setting
- Ability to lead groups in various outdoor environments
Preferred:
- In Accordance with Section 11.A. State of Maine Youth Camp Rule, "the camp director must be at least 25 years of age. To assist with the 24 hour coverage of camp, you must be able to serve as Director on Duty on a rotating basis or as needed.
- Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR Certifications or willingness to attend training
- Prior supervisory experience
- Have a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record and willingness to drive 12 passenger vans. This camp is licensed by the State of Maine. You must meet the State of Maine requirement for driving vehicles, "Drivers of vehicles carrying campers must be at least 21 years of age and be approved by the camp’s auto liability insurer’s agent."

Compensation Information
