The Newlin Grist Mill, located in Glen Mills, PA, is a private non-profit foundation dedicated to preserving a 1704 grist mill and its surrounding 160-acres of open space. The Nicholas Newlin Foundation was established in 1960 by E. Mortimer Newlin, a ninth generation descendant, to restore and maintain the mill as a museum. The Newlin Mill Park, one of the last remaining open spaces in Delaware County, operates for the pleasure and education of the public and serves as a refuge for plants, animals and birds, as well as the park’s historic buildings.
Summer Discovery Camp is an educational summer program that offers history and nature-based experiences in an engaging and inclusive outdoor environment. Through scientific exploration and respect for the environment, campers share unique experiences that connect and expand their interactions with each other and their community. Summer Discovery is the place where learning is fun! Camp staff serve as exemplary role models while instilling in campers sense of exploration, play, learning, community, and FUN.
Summary
About the Position:
The Assistant Camp Director (AD) works with the Camp Director to provide quality hands-on educational experiences for campers ages 4 to 12 during the summer camp season. While flexible, the AD must be available to start by June 8th and be present through July 31st. During program weeks (June 22-26, July 13-17, and July 27-31), admin staff arrive by 6:30am daily and are typically on site until at least 3:30pm.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- pre-season setup and post-season cleanup
- assisting with staff training
- activity materials prep and cleanup
- assisting with camper drop off and pickup
- program delivery
- staff support and supervision
- camper behavior management
The AD is a role model for campers and staff, and helps create a welcoming supportive environment for learning and exploration. They play a big role in making sure that our campers and staff are supported, having fun, and feel like a part of our camp family!
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- In-progress or completed degree in education or associated field
- Previous experience with summer camps, including but not limited to program assistants, counselors-in-training, counselors, and curriculum specialists
- Enthusiasm, creativity, and resourcefulness in working with children
- Excellent communication
- Strong sense of teamwork and ability to motivate camp staff
- Driver’s license with a clean driving record
- First aid & CPR certification
- Willing to submit to a background check
- Must be available for all three weeks of programming
Physical Aspects of the Job:
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and situations requiring medical attention
- Prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, and hiking
- Must be able to lift between 25-50 pounds
- Must be able to work outside with daily exposure to the sun, heat, rain, and animals (such as insects and frogs)
Compensation Information
The pay rate for this position is $20.00/hour.
