The Apprentice position at Muddy Sneakers is a part-time, seasonal role. Apprentices assist in the delivery of high-quality, science and nature programming in an outdoor setting, ensuring student safety and implementing respectful, positive behavior management techniques when necessary. Apprentices play an important role within the organization; their enthusiasm, knowledge, education and facilitation skills, sensitivity to the needs of students, and overall commitment are essential for our success. Apprentices report directly to their Muddy Sneakers Program Manager.

Summary

Essential Responsibilities

Strong candidates will be committed to the Muddy Sneakers mission and capable of fulfilling the following responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality field instruction and engaging science and nature programming.
  • Ensure exemplary field safety for all students.
  • Implement positive and respectful behavior management techniques.
  • Assist in preparing vehicles for field use (cleaning, fueling, stocking supplies).
  • Report needed resupply items to the Program Manager.
  • Collaborate with research partners as necessary to analyze the Muddy Sneakers program.
  • Assist with development and outreach events as needed.
  • Staff periodic special events and booths throughout the year.
  • Attend all required staff meetings and one-on-one meetings.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 

Knowledge:

  • Become well-versed in Muddy Sneakers' organizational structure and program curriculum.
  • Stay up-to-date with state changes in End of Grade (EOG) evaluations, testing practices, and curriculum standards.

Skills:

  • Communicate effectively in English. Bilingual Spanish language speakers are encouraged to apply.
  • Read written documentation both on paper and on screen.
  • Make sound decisions in high-stress situations.
  • Recognize and respond positively to social cues of children and adults.
  • Utilize discretion when faced with sensitive issues.
  • Work effectively in a team, demonstrate interactive behaviors, and respect a chain of command.
  • Help build and maintain close relationships with school partners.

Abilities:

  • Be comfortable and work effectively in an outdoor or natural setting for extended periods.
  • Work with and have patience for children for up to 8 hours a day.
  • Hike up to five (5) miles each day.
  • Lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds.

 

 

Compensation Information

Term and Compensation

Apprentice positions are part-time, seasonal, with a weekly commitment of up to 4 days of work. Apprentices must be able to commit to a six-month to one-year term.

Apprentices are paid at an hourly rate of $16/hour.
