Seeking an individual passionate about community engagement and environmental stewardship along the Appalachian Trail in Maine.
Summary
The Appalachian Trail Outreach Steward is a full-time AmeriCorps service position hosted by the Maine Appalachian Trail Club in partnership with Goodwill Northern New England.
Appalachian Trail Outreach Steward - Position Overview:
- Location: The Maine section of the Appalachian Trail (working from a home office, in Maine, with outreach to various locations including along the Appalachian Trail.)
- Duration: January until the end of August 2026
- Service Hours: 1,200 hours
Key Responsibilities:
- Volunteer Recruitment and Support: Recruit and support volunteer groups engaged in Appalachian Trail work. Maintain a volunteer database to match volunteers with experienced trail maintainers and partner organizations.
- Project Coordination: Help organize trail projects that involve high school, college, summer camp, underserved youth and adult groups. Examples include building bog bridges, tent platforms, and trimming brush.
- Alpine Education Program: Implement an educational program that includes off-trail presentations and guided hikes on Saddleback and Bigelow Mountains. Collaborate with MATC’s seasonal Ridgerunners to deliver program content.
- Outdoor Ethics Program: Lead outdoor ethics hikes and indoor workshops for children and adults at various locations promoting Leave No Trace principles and environmental awareness.
- Record keeping and Communication: Maintain accurate records of volunteer hours and release forms. Contribute to internal and external communications, including reports, evaluations, and social media content.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience in volunteer management and community outreach
- Strong backcountry camping and hiking skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Proficiency in social media and Microsoft Office or Google Workspace
- First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Passion, knowledge and experience for the outdoors and environmental conservation

Compensation Information
- Compensation: Bi-weekly living allowance ($1,050 before taxes), a one-time
- $3,105.52 housing stipend, a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award ($5,176.50) upon completion of 1200 hours, health insurance, phone and mileage reimbursements, training and professional development.
