The Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Supervisor at the ABAC's Georgia Museum of Agriculture (GMA) oversees the development, implementation, promotion, and staff management for educational programs focused on agriculture and natural resources. The primary goal is to foster connection between learners and these vital topics through hands-on, interactive experiences, increasing their awareness to where their food, fiber, and shelter come from-agriculture!

Position Summary: The Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Supervisor overseas ANR educational programming at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture (GMA). Destination Ag is the primary ANR education program managed by the ANR Supervisor. Delivering free educational programming to children in PreK – 5th grade since 2016. Destination Ag’s mission is to provide interactive, educational experiences focused on modern agriculture and natural resources for children and all guests. 

The ANR Supervisor will work closely with and report to the GMA’s Assistant Director. 

Primary Duties: Primary duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct and drive all aspects of a state standards, curriculum based ANR educational program for schools and youth groups, Pre-K – 12. Including but not limited to creating weekly school schedules, annual reporting, overseeing the development of new standards-based curriculum, and teaching as needed.
  • All aspects of supervision/management of the ANR Program Specialist, ANR Educators, and ANR Student Workers (instructors/interns). 
  • Assessing ANR program numbers and market to target school districts.
  • Drive ANR program development, assessment, and improvement, including working with ABAC’s Internal Review Board and maintaining compliance.
  • Develop community, state and national partnerships; promote and foster engagement in GMA ANR programming.
  • Assist the GMA Assistant Director in maintaining state and federal permits and assist in ANR animal husbandry.
  • Works with GMA Assistant Director to develop, plan, and implement annual budget for Destination Ag.
  • Work closely with the GMA’s Assistant Director and the Historic Supervisor in educational program scheduling and implementation.
  • Maintain an active Destination Ag Advisory Committee.
  • ABAC Liaison – work closely with ABAC Faculty and staff in the development and implementation of ABAC student learning opportunities. 
  • Assist in implementation of Historic Programming when needed.
  • Ensure a safe environment for all guests and co-workers.
  • Assist the GMA administrative team in organizing and implementing GMA special events.
  • Assist in planning and execution of Museum programming and special events. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 years in formal or informal agriculture/environmental education.
  • 3-5 years management experience and strong interpersonal and supervisory skills.
  • 3-5 years of animal husbandry, training, and program use experience.
  • All the above generally gained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a four-year degree from an accredited college or university and 5 years of professional experience in related fields.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, agricultural education, natural resources, or similar fields (or equivalent experience).  
  • One to two years’ experience in managing employees (training, creating work schedules, etc.).
  • Excellent group dynamic and behavior management skills, ability to engage children and direct them in an active teaching environment.
  • Friendly, open and professional demeanor with demonstrated ability to initiate conversations with teachers and anticipate their needs.
  • Background knowledge and understanding of agriculture and/or ecological concepts. 
  • Willingness to handle and work with live animals, including reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
  • Strong customer service focus and the ability/desire to ensure an excellent experience for all visitors and constituents.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with people of diverse ages (3 years to 100 years) and various educational and personal backgrounds.
  • Ability to present and maintain a warm and enthusiastic demeanor with guests and co-workers.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with the public in one-on-one and large group situations, and to respond to questions from various constituencies.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing work environment, including working outdoors in varying weather conditions, and contact with pollen, dust and mold. 
  • Ability to work Saturdays as needed.
  • Carry and lift at least 25 lbs.
  • Read and assimilate information, and write to communicate information clearly;
  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions throughout the year.
