Summary
Based in Middlebury, Vermont, this staff position will connect youth with lands and trails in Middlebury and Cornwall through MALT’s popular after-school programs. The After-School Environmental Educator will design and facilitate outdoor education experiences for students age 5-12, alongside a co-instructor. There are up to 14 students in a group. The educator is responsible for keeping students safe, managing behavior, and delivering educational content.
After-school programs are 100% outdoors in all weather conditions – the ability to manage both your own comfort and student well-being in the outdoors for up to three hours at a time is required.
The hours for this position are 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM on the following days and locations:
• Tuesdays and Thursdays – Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury, VT
• Wednesdays – Pink House Farm in Cornwall, VT

The position begins the week of February 6th, and ends on June 8th. There is no after-school on school breaks (Feb. 20-24 and Apr. 24-28) or on early release days (March 6, April 5, & May 3). After-school may be cancelled due to inclement weather.
There may be opportunities to work additional hours during MALT’s February and April Vacation Camps, although this is not a requirement of the position. This position may be rehired for the Fall 2023 after school season.
Essential Functions
• Co-develop and lead outdoor after-school programs for 14 children (ages 5-13) per day, with the assistance of a co-educator;
• Serve on a team that strives for a safe, nurturing, and welcoming experience for all campers.
Required Qualifications
• Previous experience working with youth ages 5-13 in any setting, outdoors a plus;
• Ability to work outdoors safely and comfortably in all seasons;
• A vehicle is not necessary, but you must be able to arrive at MALT’s office by 2:00 PM on program days;
• First Aid/CPR Certification (Wilderness First Aid or First Responder are preferred, but not required);
• Must be able to move over uneven terrain including deep forests and snow-covered landscapes;
• Must be 18 years or older to apply;
• Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident;
• Must be able to pass a federal criminal background check.
Desired Qualifications
• Strong interest in natural history topics (e.g., birding, environmental sciences, animal tracking, wilderness living, animal behavior, botany, and geology);
• Experience developing and leading outdoor environmental education activities;
• Experience mentoring school-age children (5 to 13);
• Strong group management skills; ability to manage and engage a group of up to 14 children;
• Love of outdoor exploration and questioning, ability to model curiosity, wonder, and play in the natural world;

Compensation Information
