Academic Opportunities in Ocean, Climate & Marine Sciences – Papua New Guinea

The Papua New Guinea University of Natural Resources and Environment (PNGUNRE) invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced academics and researchers for four senior academic positions within its Momis Ocean and Climate Research Institute (MOCRI), based in Rabaul, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea.

PNGUNRE is strengthening MOCRI as a specialist hub for ocean and climate research, environmental monitoring, marine and coastal resource management, climate resilience and sustainable development. We are seeking academics and researchers interested in contributing their expertise to some of the most important ocean, climate and environmental challenges facing Papua New Guinea and the wider Pacific region.

Current Academic Vacancies

1. Associate Professor – Oceanography & Marine Science
   A senior academic and research leadership position focusing on oceanography, marine science, ocean-climate interactions, marine resource management, climate change and sustainable development.
2. Senior Lecturer – Ocean & Climate Research
   Focusing on ocean science, climate variability and change, marine environmental science, atmospheric processes, environmental monitoring, marine conservation, pollution, and climate and disaster risk.
3. Senior Lecturer – Island & Marine Resources
   Focusing on ocean and marine science, island and coastal resource management, marine conservation, climate variability, environmental pollution, sustainable marine resources and climate and disaster risk management.
4. Senior Lecturer – Integrated Coastal Management
   Focusing on integrated coastal management, coastal and marine ecology, marine protected areas, blue and green economy, environmental governance, climate change, conservation, pollution and coastal disaster risk management.

Who We Are Looking For

Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and demonstrate appropriate university teaching, research and professional experience.

Senior Lecturer applicants should normally have at least five years of relevant academic, research or professional experience, while the Associate Professor position requires at least ten years of relevant experience together with a strong record of research leadership and scholarly publication.

PNGUNRE is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in areas including oceanography, marine science, climate science, coastal and island resource management, marine ecosystems and biodiversity, environmental science, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, environmental governance, blue economy, marine pollution, sustainable development and related disciplines.

Successful candidates will contribute to teaching and curriculum development, undergraduate and postgraduate research supervision, applied and multidisciplinary research, scholarly publication, external research funding, and collaboration with government, communities, industry and national and international research institutions.
